Ron Forsyth,[sp?] years ago had said that engraving had the fastest turn around time in bring out a gun.
The barrel, the action and it's workings the most time and labor - truely the stuff of a great gun.
...and it is this stuff ol'beans, that is passed over in the red carpet treatment given to guns on the net.
Field worthy, or piffle!

Typically nobody bothers to put quality engraving a poor quality gun. However there are certainly top quality guns without the quality engraving.

More about modern up-grades of the old classics.
Things like opulant wood and shiny engravings.

What's wrong with re-stocking an old classic to fit you, keeping the old stock just in case??? A gun that fits the specific shooter is more of a game gun then one that doesn't!!!

Lowell, You may be right. This old clunker of a Nitro .410 was loose/off-face and one barrel shot into left field...or was it right field? The forcing cones had been obscenely lengthened with a common chucking reamer with a 45 degree leade. Anyway, I bought it and fixed all the sins and have shot clays and hunted and enjoyed this gun immensely. BTW, I did get a great price and it was contingent on the inspection. I had the problems solved inside of a month or so for about $400 or less. I'm just over $2k of 5-6 yr old money in the gun, probably too much. But, I'm betting there are some pennyloafer shufflers from that red carpet arena that would get me square, if I wanted out.

I remember reading something similar in reference on Spanish guns. Some of their ole' clunkers have surprising amounts of engraving.
