Picked up a new Ruger catalog last week. Under the Gold Label listing it said stock exhausted, redesigned model anticipated in 2009.

Thanks Jim for the information. Once again Ruger could have made its Red Label something special instead of wasting time and money developing a flawed side by side.

Most of the guys I shoot with don't care that much for the Gold Label. Their biggest complaint? The tiny forend. Everyone's comment is the same around here: Splinter forearms are nice for little English guns but we shoot trap and skeet and don't like hot barrels. The bigger the forearm, the better for us.

And why would a sane person want to use a light 12-gauge gamegun regularly for trap or skeet?

...well maybe just a big forend, a little thicker and longer barrels, a monte carlo, an aluminum adustable buttplate, adjustable comb, a mercury recoil tamer in the butt, ballast in the forend to compensate...and wa-la! 8 1/4 lbs of target gun!

What else would someone use to shoot skeet or sporting clays with? A light gun, 7/8 or 1 oz. loads is normal to shoot. SXS skeet and trap shoots going on all over the US. They call them Vintagers shoots. But those barrels get a little hot when you don't have a forearm on them.

I shoot various SxS venues, including the UP Classic, and only flurries produce enough heat to be a bother. A thin glove takes care of most games and an insulated one takes care of the infrequent flurry.

I just posted it as a newsy item. I've been underwhelmed by the Ruger shotguns from the beginning. Turning a mediocre Red Label on its side to call it a SxS didn't excite me, either. Now that they're in the $3000 area, there are thousands of old and new doubles available in that range, for my taste. And many appealing ones for less. I wonder if they'll be smart enough to offer two triggers this time. Does anyone know why the Gold was stopped? Thank you, jl
