A while back we had a disscusion of the wide range of actual bore dimensions found on many 12ga guns. I was reading some posts here concerning choke tube installation and am wondering if when a company, such as Briley, installs tubes are they custom made to match the bore of the gun? I would assume this might be the case? If this is done and new or replacement tubes are required later on must one have the custom dimensions for their own gun? Has anyone ever bought choke tubes for a gun and found they didn't fit or really chewed plastic wads up or any other problems? I am thinking specifically of guns with bore diameters larger than standard. Thanks

The Briley tubes I have had made are custom to match the bore of the existing barrel. I only have Briley chokes so I can't compare fowling. With the thin wall chokes I haven't had any great amount of fowling and have never had a bad experience with them.

I've had a few Briley choked guns as well. They are matched diameter to the bores.
Briley marks the chokes with "series" identification. I believe that they make chokes for bore size increments like every .005" dia. or so. I think we'd be kidding ourselves in believing they are perfectly fitted to the bores so a skeet choke is exactly .xxx"

Thank-you RON. I had never really thought about the actual bore diameter in relation to choke tube installation. I simply was thinking you sent your gun to have tubes installed, the installer reamed and threaded the bore and screwed in a set of chokes. Then reading other post where the subject was considered for some older guns I suddenly remebered the variance in bore diameters! Thanks for the information!

Briley and Seminole will make tubes to your specificatons. If your bore is .734 and your desire a constriction of .003 then Briley will make a tube measuring .737. They have never charged me any extra for this.
The Briley "Series" are based on the external diameter of the tubes and of course your bore size. I have a Winchester M21 and a Merkel 47E that use S-1 series. The tubes interchange between the guns. I also owns guns that use S-2 and S-26. If only they were all the same bore size...
Seminole states that they need your bore size to make the chokes.

I have a Mint Briley 12 ga. choke tube- recessed 17-PH stainless series S-25 ML also marked IC and then Lead or Stee any one interested, I'll list this in the For Sale sector- and I can give you accurate machinist's dims. on the tube if needed- threads are pristine-RWTF

I forgot to mention that Briley has chakes for Lead Only and for Steel shot. If you order a Modified choke that is hardened for Steel shot it will be of less constriction than one that is Lead Only. That's another reason I order Briley chokes by the diameter I desire.
Briley will however mark the choke as you desire. Modified for 12 GA to me is .020 constriction from the bore. I'd never shoot steel shot in anything tighter than that. I want my steel shot chokes marked the same as those that are Lead Only, i.e. .020 is Mod, rather it is Lead Only or Steel shot capable. Just tell Briley when ordering and they'll mark as desired.
Another good deal from Briley... I received a set of extended Steel shot chokes for a Model 23 Winchester. The last part of the knurling on those extended chokes would rub each other when screwed into the barrels. I called Briley and returned them as instructed. Briley removed the last 1/2" of knurling and REPLATED (black oxide or something like that...) the chokes and returned them to me ASAP. No charge of course. Brileys are a bit expensive but I've never had an unaddressed complaint about them.

Briely is most always a nice place to visit if in the Houston area.They usally have some good gun values to be found in older and traded in guns.
