Looks like quarter-sawn poplar. Needs a restock in good old American Kevlar (Juglans Plastica).
Strength and grain orientation first, then figure.

Termites? Seriously thought, the wood looks severely degraded. Probably dry rot fungus.

"The wood!" was also my first thought. "The wood looks worm-eaten." [wood beetle larvae].However, I can't really tell from the photo 'vas ist loss", so await the report, with the other guessers here.
Relax; we're all experts here.

my guess is due to Barry's location,a horse took a roll on it? That lower tang needed some help to get bent like that. Also enjoy your work Barry,

Fungus never bent a lower tang like that one is bent. Bad spill or big fall must have happened. Good job for a stocker.

Hopefully this doesn't go with the stock bending thread ...

Fungus didn't bend it, whatever brought about the final breaking of the stock bent the tang. I'm sure all of us speculators will find out shortly what really happenend. But I do know that something in the wood doesn't look right. There should be crisp and sharp points to the broken wood, this doesn't have it.
I have a very old pantry box with lid, that has remenants of powder post beetles, and they are mainly in the wood not on it.
