This discussion reminds me of the Savage vs Remington thread on Benchrest Central - "mine is the best.....no, no, mine is the best."

I'll probably be the only person that weighs in on the Gold Label that actually owns & shoots one. I bought mine at a 1/2 what they're going for now, new in the box, because I collect American made SxS's. When I first saw the prototypes at the Vintagers years ago, I know I was going to have one.

You have to remember: It's a 6 1/2 lb 12 gauge game gun. A trap gun it's not - just shoot a round of trap with 3 dram 1 1/8 oz loads & you'll regret it. Shoot skeet or sporting clays with light 7/8 or 3/4 oz loads & it's a pleasure. I could never understand why it has 3" chambers. Goose loads in a 6 1/2 lb gun?

Are there thing I would change on the Gold Label? Sure, but if & when a new version comes out, I'll be on the look out for the right deal to snatch one up. If the new one is 20 ga, fixed IC & Mod chokes, then they've been reading my mind.

Regards, Ron

I don't live in Cleveland, Lowell. I just root for the Browns. I live about forty miles from Vandalia. The REAL shooting country. And you mention ENGLISH game gun. Like I said, this is America. And I doubt that ANY gun has ever seen more (clay) birds than the Model 12. (And you have to swing and carry a gun when you hunt rabbits, anyway, so what's the dif?) History lesson complete.

I know the Vandalia area well Jimmy- I'm from Cinci- but never was a huge Bengals fan- now the Reds- back in the great Marge Schott and "Charlie Hustler" daxe- that's a 'whole nother ball game, ain't it"> Sure agree with you on the M12 and clays- read the Dave Petzal tribute to that aspect of the great "Perfect Repeater" in May-June 1985 issue of SC-all Americans that served prior to the M-16 snafu know what a heavy rifle (M-1 Garand, M-14_)is like- the real guys who hunt heavy cover in high Nov. winds in SD or MT for pheasant and mallards- that's M12 and M21 territory- Now those that hunt manicured stocked hunting preserves with guides and "by the numbers trained" pointing "dawgs" might enjoy a 6 & 1/2 lb. London Best or other top-grade side by- weight and balance are individual matters- I recently sold an 1919 era 12 ga. Trojan 30" No. 2 frame- replaced it with a 1928 era (sn 225318) 12 ga. VH 30" barrels but No. 1 & 1/2" frame- and the balance is still about at the hinge pin, but the VH feels like a 20 bore in my fists-(and I just weighed it on USPS scales- 7 lbs. right on the dime-I am guessing the Trojan weighted closer to 7 &3/4 lbs.compared to the heavier Trojan- let alone my "beater" HE Fox 12--I'd like to attend one of the SC shoots and shoot that VH- if the lack of ejectors isn't a handicap (I reload AA 12's) but I would also like to compete "head to head" using one of my prized M12's--Charlie Waterman once wrote "Never shoot against a man with his well-worn pumpgun- it didn't get worn by sitting in a gun case all year"!! Jimmy, you may be from good SHOOTING country (as in trap), but I'd submit that Iowa--where I live--is far more serious UPLAND HUNTING country. And when you're going to walk a few miles to shoot pheasants, that's just a tad bit different than pulling the trap gun out of the trunk and strolling from one station to the next while breaking clay birds. In the latter case, gun weight doesn't really matter. In the former case, it very definitely does matter. Start out at 8 in the morning with an 8 pound gun and you'll wish it were a 6 1/2 pound gun come 3 pm.

Jim referred to what appeals to him. My reference was to a GL being a bargain GIVEN MARKET PRICES at $3K. Irrelevant whether I like it, Jim likes it, or Roger likes it. Just like a Model 21 at $5K if most are selling at $6K, it's a bargain--to someone who wants either a GL or a 21. If someone asks my opinion on whether X is a good price for Y gun, I'll respond that it either is or isn't, depending on the market--not depending on whether I think gun Y is worth price X. That determination would be my opinion, which probably isn't the questioner's opinion since he's researching prices on gun Y. Different discussion entirely if the question is, "What sxs would you suggest in the $3K range?"

You are probably right, Larry. You are probably right. But I do hunt all day long with a Model 21 12 gauge with a BTFE and have for years now.

gee, that's all swell Larry, but that still is not and has nothing to do with what Jim said. nowhere in his post did bargain come up. he never once commented on what it was worth or how good a deal it was. all he remarked on was all the other stuff available in that price range. nothing to do with the ruger's value did he ever mention.
