This I-grade gun has the serrated cap on the pistol grip. The buttplate has only concentric curved grooves arcing out from the center and stopping short of the screws. I assumed this was a replacement, because someone added two thin leather (yes, leather) spacers for an extra 1/8" of pull. I'll get out to the nearby NRA library and research buttplates in the Lefever book before I go about replacing it. There are no marks other than the serial number on the underside of the barrels. The guard plate has patent dates from 1872 to '87. Aside from "Lefever Arms Co" on the sideplates there are no other marks besides those noted. The gun shows some use but no abuse, which was what attracted me to it. Wood-to-metal fit is excellent, and the reddish walnut is similar in color (oops, colour) to that on an E M Reilly rook rifle I treasure. Might it be English walnut?

It probably is English walnut. If you want the LAC monogram butt-plate, google Dutchman's Woodworks, and order one to fit...Geo

Valman, Your buttplate sound as if it is original and proper for an I grade, minus the leather spacers of course. I was incorrect in saying SD&G was Shoverly Dales and Gates... it should be Shoverly, Daly, and Gales. Hopefully this was a minor brain fart and not early Altzheimers. Lefever claimed to use imported walnut on their guns, and my I's and DS's appear to be relatively plain English walnut.

Thanks again. Since the earlier postings, I've done a little more research. I gather that Lefever made the I-grade especially for Schoverling, Daly & Gales, the big NYC sporting goods dealers (Daly being the original Charles Daly), even though there are no marks to that effect on this particular gun. I plan to remove the leather spacers and keep the buttplate as is. From everything I read, including several current value guides, I think I got my $600's worth.
