This is my first off topic since i been posting here, so maybe jOe will spare me this one!  I have spotted a nice origianl(looking to me)model 17. The blue apears to me at about 70-75%. The wood a tad worse at 60%. From the eye it looked to have 28" barrels choked mod. Screws where all good, no pitting on the outside finish. Didn't check the bores(yet), what else do i need to look at before i start my haggling? I only have one other pump, a Win. model 12 20ga. skeet with straight grip and solid rib. This would make a nice mate? Purchase price was 225.00......so what do you'll think?

buy it. personally i'd stay away from model 10's. those are an entirely different beast. but 17's don't just show up on every used gun rack. the condition you describe i'd consider it a good deal at the tagged price. only pumps you'll find in that range won't touch it for design/bld quality. was a JMB design btw and ended up being the ithaca model 37 down the road.
i've never had one but it's only from lack of opportunity.

Battle, I'd say buy it! I gave $220 for mine and I love it. In no way does it compare with the Rems Mod. 10 or 29: both of those guns are a nightmare of design. Their little carrier flipper is prone to wear out and no gunsmith will attempt to fix it. But the Mod. 17 is a fine gun with no function problems. The only complaint might be it has a trigger guard a bit too snug if the shooter is wearing gloves in cold weather. FBN25 is correct. When the Remington patents ran out Ithaca grabbed the design and produced the Model 37, another great gun. Chops

Battle ---- I recently bought a ribbed 17 for myself. Got a killer piece of wood for it & will have it stocked soon followed by a "F" grade engraving pattern. Like others, I'm very impressed with the 17. I was told that there were only approx. 40,000 made. Buy it by all means. ken

I used mine exclusively for pheasant two years ago, great, easy carrying little gun. I got lucky and have a two barreled set, both ribbed and numbered.
Maybe I should do a Hurst upgrade...

Ken......when i first studied the gun over, i thought this would make a great up grade. I remembered your post about free engraving of screws.  Well maybe we could add a little more scratching later too!
