after thinking back to the only one of these i ever owned i realized that the "frame" is in fact damaged. it doesn't have a hole blown in it tho. it's missing the small round lug against which the firing pin spring seats. i would not bet my freedom from prison that the atf would consider that damaged enough to not count any more.

Can I sell/ship it to a guy that does not have an FFL?

opinions please.

My opinion is simple and short: NO.
This is the "ATF Jack-booted Thugs" and Federal Law you're flirting with. Why in Hell do you want opinions?
Call the ATF and get the straight story(good luck) or be smart/safe and ship it to an FFL holder.

I agree with Recoil Rob "here we go again".

I don't think there's ANY disagreement after seeing the topic starters pic. However here in Arizona, the owner as an individual, could sell it to any other State resident who doesn't have a criminal record with no paperwork requirement whatsoever.
Individuals set up at gun shows and do this all the time. They put a sign on their table saying "Private Party" or something to that effect. This is what John McCain is referring to when he talks about the "Gunshow Loophole"

I was gonna get a close up pic of the frame w/o the slide that shows the metal was ripped from the frame ... then I remembered a guy broke in Thurs and stole my camera, my Marlin 22 lever, $1000 of coins, and my kids play station. Could have been much worse ... thank you gun safe. I hugged my safe, then my wife, when I got home.

If you look at the schematic parts break down, the missing piece is shown as an integral part of the frame sticking up at the rear... not a part of the slide, and not a separate piece.

I decided not to ship the frame without an FFL on the other end, buyer didn't like it, but hey, we can't all be happy campers. I shipped all the other parts and told him to return them if he wanted.

I appreciate all the opinions and information shared. I wanted to get direction on whether a "Destroyed" frame could be shipped without an FFL or not. If yes, then address the how bad is it question.

If you have one, pull the slide and have a look see. Mine's gone, but it looks like the metal on the frame was ripped when it left town.

BTW, that a real beauty of an engraved Colt there. yum yum.

Charlie

if you look at frames the ATF allows to be shipped without an ffl you'll typicall see cut completely in half and missing one entire half, crushed in a press, or rough forgings missing key machining cuts that prohibits it even being assembled. a small chunk off the back end won't count.

Enclose it in a piece galvanized pipe and ship it as a washing machine part.
