One comment re cleaning per Steve's recomendation. According to an article I read many years ago in the "Rifleman" this method of cleaning was generally understood in the days these guns were being routinly used with black powder. This water cleaning also dissolved the corrosive salts which was a component of the primers of the day. Much of the piting found in guns of this era today, which is generally blamed on the BP, actually came about after the owners switched to smokeless & not realizing the dangers of the primers used was not so prone to cleaning his guns. Today this is still a cheap, efficient method of cleaning a smooth bore breech loader & primers are generally not a concern anymore.

I have some 16 black powder shells to sell if anyone is interested.

Dave would get his dues, of course.

If you hate the smell and cleanup but love the smoke and noise give this a try.

My problem is I love the smell and mess of blackpowder along with the smoke and noise. Looks like it would be an interesting substitute though.

Doesn't water from cleanup have the potential of getting under the rib and rusting there?

As a matter of fact, RCBS has a die and shell holder now, specifically for loading brass shotshells in a metallic press. I bought one just after they came out and have been very happy with their performance.

Yes. You can buy it on Ebay, but it is cheaper to go with a white glue like Elmer's.

I've tried waterglass, Elmer's, Duco cement and silicone. They all work to some extent, but all eventually failed when firing the right barrel of my double several times while leaving the same shell in the left barrel. The only thing that has not failed me is the use of a hot glue gun.

I have shot the Magtech brass a lot. The only issue I have had is the slightly smaller rim, sometimes drops behind the loose fitting extractor on my hammer gun.

I also use large pistol primers, equal volumes of shot and powder, with cushion and nitro wads ajdusted to keep the over shot wad a 1/4" or less from the top. I seal it with white glue.

Since I shoot skeet, I do not know how the white glue would hold up under rough handling in the field or a wet duck blind.

There seems to be more blow back than with plastic shells and as mentioned, black powder required much more clean up. I usually deprime then washed the shells out with soapy water and a small nylon bottle brush. If I want them shiny again its SOS pad time.

Having started with muzzle loading shotguns, deassembly and soap and water gun cleanings are old hat. It is the price you pay to enjoy the sight, sound, feel and smell of black powder.

Good Luck
