Last Sat an attorney while shooting skeet was shot in the back by his son. This happened at the Sportsman Gun and Reel Club in Amherst Township, Oh. The son was using the fathers 12ga auto because his gun was being repaired. It is unclear from the 911 call if the incident was accidental or intentional. The father is paralyzed from the waist down. The father & son shoot skeet three times a week. All this is from the local paper.

Gordon: That is so sad to hear. Even if unintentional it was so unnecessary. Proper gun handling, I believe, should be taught from infancy. Every new gun handled by the unexperienced should be gone over in detail by someone who is experienced with that particular make and model. Lastly, particularly in a skeet, trap or clays scenario, the gun should not be loaded until the shooter is on the firing line and non-shooters well behind it. This is something that the so9n must live with for the remainder of his life.

I expect most here know this but it's good to keep in mind. There's nothing much more deadly that a shotgun at close range even when loaded with birdshot. Most torso wounds at that distance are fatal so I guess we can say this guy is lucky to have survived. My thoughts to the family. Jim

Ditto that- as it says in the Bible- "Judge Not"- so I'm going with an accident a la Cheney in TX- but to have to live with the fact that you put your own father in a wheelchair forever, due to a split second of carelessness- and it is one of Murphy's irrefutable laws of the Hard-Assed World- when you don't mean for a gun to go off- it does, and 90% of the time some fellow human being is shot by accident!!

A terrible tragedy. I will strive to be more diligent myself and to be aware of others with guns at the range and afield. I'm always a bit more on edge when shooting in a squad with an auto in the mix. I'll probably start watching/counting the shells being loaded and shots fired, just out of nervousness.

It's one of the main reasons I dislike organized shooting. You have no control over who is holding the guns around you. I also don't believe in sharing guns...too much extra handling goes on when you have people taking turns.

Reason I dislike those stinkin repeaters!!! Doubles only, whether they be the SxS or O/U keep them cracked until you are ready to shoot!! Safest firearm ever built!!!

It pays to keep a constant eye on a man with an auto shotgun when shooting with him.
