i'd been watching for one for a while to fill out my dad's set (he's on his own for a 28 ga) and what i saw closed on gunbroker just about any intact unmolested 20 will bring $400 at least. for long distance sale you gotta add shipping and ffl xfr fees so that $400 turns into well past $450. and this gun is where you can hold it in your hands before paying for it.

the subject of shooting 2-3/4" shells in the short chambered model 12's comes up pretty regularly here and on the other board and opinions run the gamut from "buy 2.5" shells" to "i've shot 2.75" shells in mine since 1952 and never had a problem". as jim said, it's a good arguing point for a lower price. then leave it alone anyway.

Will the short chambered guns cycle and feed the 2 3/4" shells???
I have a 16 gauge built in 1919 that had its chamber rebored and ejector port resized to fit the 2 3/4 length shells.

16's are pickier than 20's about cycling 2-3/4" shells in short chambered guns. Problem seems to be the ejector port rather than anything to do with the chamber itself.

$600.00 doesn't seem to be that far out of line for a nice 20 gauge Model 12, even if the bluing is worn off. If the wood is original and it works well, I would not be afraid to buy it for that price. It sounds like a rebluing job would make you a pretty nice gun. Good luck.

Looked at gun again today. Mfg 1913 according to tag on gun. Measured chamber and its still 2.5 in. Very even faded blue on receiver but rest of blue is OK for age of gun. Owner came in while I was looking at it(consignment gun) and I offered him $400. He said the gun shop owner was in charge so I offered him $400. Owner of gun left and shop owner said he would tell gun owner. Hmmm. Probably won't happen, but $600 is too much for me for worn mdl 12. If they split the diff @ $500 I'll go for it. Its definitly cute at 25in with that solid rib. I'll check back with them next week. JW

I would agree that $450 is a decent retail price for a Model 12 20 ga in the described condition. However why in the hell does every individual think he's going to get retail out of a used gun? The dealer can justify it because he has overhead etc. to cover. I see people walking around with guns priced at retail all the time at gun shows and when they stop at my table my usual response is "If I want to pay retail for a gun I'll buy it from a dealer and get some sort of guarantee to go with it." Their response usually is "That's what the sources I checked say this gun is worth".
The BBGV IMO should be amended to reflect the prices a typical dealer or private individual will pay for a firearm not some conceived "Retail Price" that could be realized only under the best of circumstances. This publication and other sources do a real disservice all the way around by encouraging unreasonable expectations in the general public.

Remember when measuring the chamber on a model 12 to add 1/4in to the barrel alone measurement....as the chamber ring that stays in the receiver when the gun is broken down is part of the chamber....
