The Ruger O/U 28 is a joy, please make the new gun in 20/28 and even 410, bring it under 2k with double triggers and it will be a hit.

["The Gold Label is a thoroughbred game gun, but admittedly Ruger stopped building it because of mechanical problems with the design. I believe it was the barrels that was giving owners all of the problems, at least on some other shotgun boards that was the posters major complaint."]

I'm not sure why Ruger stopped building it, but have heard several reasons. None from Ruger employees tho, so most is probably speculation. Best reason I've heard is just too expensive given the design. Its a great gun, wish we could see it in production again, with options when ordering, like dimensions, etc.

An article in SSM while the Gold Label was in production reported problems with their method of joining the barrels. The writer asked about discarded barrels he saw, and was told it was cheaper to scrap them than to fix the bad ones. Very expensive to produce scrap barrels -- no return at all on that effort.

Hopefully Ruger will bring out the Gold Label again. I don't know what the problems with the previous design might have been except that I also feel it should have had double triggers for simplicity and better function. An American-made game gun is a Good Thing to have available; it would not be the first choice for the clayshooting games though (the heavier RBL would be better for these). Although I've probably now got all the shotguns I need, still a 16 gauge GL with two triggers would be pretty tempting!

The article in DGJ also described the difficulty in joining the barrels of the GL vs the Red Label. Evidently it led to wasted stock, so both more labor, time in production and wasted parts. The process required rust bluing to finish the gun. I've heard they also spent some time on the joint in front of the chambers; some guns joined cleanly, but most guns were engraved over the joint for cosmetics, more time again. Still a nice handling gun. Scott
