What is your opinion on this deal?

A local businessman, with a "high end" men's and women's clothing store, who dabbles in collectible and high-end guns, and has a small gun shop area in the back of his clothing store said he works "Estate Sales" this way. She would bring all the guns in, he would make a list of them for her, and put a price on each one , that he thinks he can get, and give her a copy. Now each month, she would receive a statement on which guns sold that month and at that time, she could pass by and pick up a check for that amount less a 20% commission, which would be his fee for handling the estate.

I originally thought that the 20% fee,[I was thinking 15% at the most], was high, but from what I'm hearing here, I now think this sounds like a pretty good deal? I think he's a reputable person and has been in business for many years, but I personally have never dealt with him before.

Is this a deal that's "Too good to be true", and usually is, and I should keep looking, or is this a "problem solved"?

thanks
binko

Truth is age has nothing to do with haveing your ducks in a row as anything can happen right now.First thing is if your guns are in a safe please let someone know what the combo is so the cutting tourch don't burn up your guns and what may be with them, yep it happened.Get to know a few folks on this forum that are from your area and let your GF know who they are.Explain to your GF how to log you on to this site.If some guns are spoken for for let her know now what goes where if you still have it when you depart.Have enough life insurance ect so the sale of guns ain't what keeps her from liveing on the street.Keep everything updated.Gun values can change very fast and you can always fine someone to nitpick even the nicest gun into junk.Don't be afraid to give a gun to a young man with the desire but not the means to start an outdoor life,it comes back tenfold.Best deal is to just keep on liveing and the heck with it all.

"just keep on living and the heck with it all"

My choice for sure! I'm just thinking publically!

PS - That's what I am trying to do, get something set up, and instruct her who to call and where to go.

thanks Will

Binko, the point I was trying to make is that different Auctions specialize in one thing or another.

Good Winchesters and Colts are Little John's Specialty

High end doubles---Julia seems ahead of the field

General run of doubles and others, Greg Martin seems to be doing ok in this area.

Other auction houses such as Amoskeag, Devine, Rock Island run the gamut of merchandize types.

I have heard from one fellow that Greg Martin offers the most favorable terms, but one should talk with each if interested in an auction.

I know a dealer or two that I would trust with my guns, and there is a comfort level there as well as possible less of a fee for selling them.

binko,

This auction house deals mainly in western items, which includes guns. I have very limited personal contact with them and no personal interest. They have a good reputation locally and have contacts all over. On high interest items, they have people on the phones accepting bids. Maybe they can answer some of your questions.

Personally, I'm fortunate to have a son, daughter, and two grandsons, (hope for more in the future), I can pass mine on to. The comments about putting things down on paper are hitting home, though. I need to do that, just in case.

Take care, Milton

Now Daryl,

That is exactly the kind of info I was looking for, I'll call them and get the skinny and report back in case someone else is interested.

thanks
binko

Anyone else have some names I could check with?

My grandfather died 23 years he had just turned down £30,000 for his collection,on the day of his funeral his so called friends in the trade took all his guns away to sell for my grandmother, it was only a few years ago that I found out that she recieved just £13,000 for the lot one particular gun was a .500 boss double rifle with damascus barrels brand new never been fired, another was a boss sidelock ejector made in the 30s mint condition, another a Joseph manton gun, I can do nothing about this now but I will be making sure it does not happen to my guns.

You might want to consider taking one or two with you. That sweet 20 gauge Ithaca Model 37 with the solid rib, that I bought when I was 16 is going with me. My son gets the rest.

All I have is my Wife and one son, an attorney in another state.

I plan on keeping, if all I can do is handle and clean them. If my economic situation turns sour the I will consider selling.

I have talked to the son about getting apprasials and selling off slow and for him to keep ones he wants. Hopefully they will be part of his inheritance
