I am deploying so if i bite the big one, my instructions are to a friend of mine to not let anyone in the shop and call the auction house I have pre arranged the sale with . everything goes to auction. National house. negotiated commision. My wife will be crying and smiling at the same time. she will be pissed to find out what I have but the check will temper her anger!!!!no fuss, no muss, no "friends" showing up to tell her that I promised them a Fox graded gun for 300.00 because we hunted together once. I have seen that too much.

I just had the pleasure of helping a friend of the family with this very issue. First, the gentlemen that passed away was a very serious collector of double barrels and had an impressive collection. Prior to his passing he made a deliberate decision to sell the majority of his highest grade guns. He contaced several other collectors including myself and offered these guns at going rate. Most were sold within a one year period. After he passed away his wife asked that I help her with the rest of the guns. I spent several hours going through the remaining guns and talking with several people on this board about their value. I listed the guns for sale on the board and all were sold within a couple of weeks as well as a collection of books. My friend's wife was pleased and very thankful for the help I provided, and I felt as though I had been of help.
I will point out that I fully agree with everyone's suggestion of keeping a log book of the Guns, with the key information including price, value, to help guide someone down the road. That being said, several times I have seen family members be more concerned about getting rid of the guns verses getting a fair value and have been very happy when the sold the entire lot at reduced prices. That's their decision to make if arrangements have not been made prior to the passing of the owner/collector.

If your just feelin' poorly, get rid of them a piece at a time. You're out of luck if shot in the back at the club - or hit on your Vespa. Look for the big playas to be dusting off their hi-grades(don't be too tuff on them)in order to keep their hi-grade homes. Money things are starting to come apart...and those with the most and best toys might be the biggest losers. Let the feeding frenzy begin!

I suspect when plates have to be filled with hot dogs and beans the gun vaults will open.

Brian, Do you have a reserve price set with the auction house and if so, what is to be done with the guns that don't sell? If you don't mind, could you say what % they are going to charge? A little advice when you get over there, DFSS, "draw first shoot straight"! binko

Thorny,
Why don't you just post "Jager's" comments within your message, as it's pretty clear to some here that you and 'he' are one in the same person. Think of the time it would save!
But mostly I'm curious as to 'why' you think that 'cash' is king when it is subject to the same inflationary ills as a quality gun or a home, etc.
I should be able to remember which country, but one in South American several years back froze all of the citizen's bankable assets and three days later these were worth about 1/3 of what they previously had been. Could happen here someday with the right legislators.
Your thoughts?

Lowell, don't forget about what happened in the "Wiemar Republic", in 1921, when it took a wheelbarrow full of cash to buy a loaf of bread. I suggest we are not far from that scenario, with our government printing money at the accelerated rate they are printing it today.
Gold and Guns, the only items that will be worth anything in the end!
My guns are, to me, like a beautiful woman, I never tire of gazing upon their beauty, naked and without shame!
