Not True! I really resent it when people start spreading unvarified "common knowledge" about my boys and me. Check the science.

Myth: The media have reported that suicides among Vietnam veterans range from 50,000 to 100,000 - 6 to 11 times the non-Vietnam veteran population.

Mortality studies show that 9,000 is a better estimate. "The CDC Vietnam Experience Study Mortality Assessment showed that during the first 5 years after discharge, deaths from suicide were 1.7 times more likely among Vietnam veterans than non-Vietnam veterans. After that initial post-service period, Vietnam veterans were no more likely to die from suicide than non-Vietnam veterans. In fact, after the 5-year post-service period, the rate of suicides is less in the Vietnam veterans' group."

From: Testimony by Dr. Houk, Oversight on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, 14 July 1988 page 17, Hearing before the Committee on Veterans' Affairs United States Senate one hundredth Congress second session. Also "Estimating the Number of Suicides Among Vietnam Veterans" (Am J Psychiatry 147, 6 June 1990 pages 772-776)

Bob you are out of touce on the numbers big time. You need to read what the shrinks show not what some goverment mucky muck tells congress to justifie not giveing proper treatment to vets.Hell the Army is going nuts right now trying to cut down on suicides with active members.
Bob I can't realy belive you posted such lies or bought the BS from the Goverment. I see it most everyday.Just in the Houston Galveston area in the last five years I have put nine suicides in the ground from this war.Over a hundred in the last ten years of V.N.vets I knew from the VA.You truely need to come to Houston and spend some time on the sixth floor of the VA hospital here.

Right Amigo........its a government conspiracy......you can find it on the internet.....

Your experience is at significant variance with my own and I've been involved with veteran's organizations here and in the midwest for thirty some years. Some of the bizzare numbers you can find show that more than half of all the folks who served in country have killed themselves since. Good multi-center psychiatric and scientific research does not support these wild claims. These are obviously made up numbers with no science behind them, usually published by someone with a grudge or someone with their hand out. Viet Nam vets are as well or better adjusted than vets of any US war and most have continued their lives as successful family men, business men and members of their communities and in many cases, leaders. Changed....maybe, suicidal....no! I've never personally known of a VN veteran who committed suicide. I recently attended a professional conference on post traumatic care of US casualties and I am aware of new initiatives that have been instituted and happy to see them. To stereotype VN vets as some sort of ne'r-do-well, agent-orange-crazed, suicicidal losers is wrong and I'll never tolerate it when I see it.

Of course, maybe I'm delusional, having once been directly sprayed with AO while on an operation........

Pretty common knowledge about Patton being a crybaby, Don. Always being called out by Bradley and Eisenhower. Had his command taken away from him. Had to beg Ike not to punish him more than once for opening his mouth. Had to apologize for slapping his men. He was removed from command when he had his auto accident that he ended up dying from.
