I have taken down and reassembled Elsies quite a few times, and each time during reassembly, I get to thinking that there's got to be an easier way to align the top break lever pivot pin with the hole in the trigger plate. I have a file, that I have reformed the tang into a pin shape to move this pin into position, by prying it to the center position, through the detent hole in the trigger plate, but the force of the spring on this pin, makes it a real fete which I would like to improve upon.

Any suggestions???

thanks
binko

Go to the L C Smith website and see The Bill Kraft Method or The C Clamp Method. Jent --- http://www.picturetrail.com/sfx/album/view/15525639/235908411?&offset=1070

This is the link to the website that you need.

I usually do, right after my tool slips, and I jam my thumb on the receiver...!

binko,
That is probably the worse thing to do. First you are putting a lot of stress on the top lever and also have a real good chance of making that hole (4-40 screw) oblong or flattening the threads. Hunter Arms employees used a 3/32 straight punch with a old flat bladed screw driver with a notch in it to push against the punch.

The best way is the way the late Russ Ruppel described using a c clamp with a 3/32 pin secured in the top hole.
I believe the one on the site is a copy I made. Easy to do and leaves hands free to snug screws up.

I knew there had to be a better and easier way, just never did see it done or talk to anyone that knew. Most newer gunsmiths never saw and Elsie, and one that I talked to, said he didn't fool with them, because they were too hard to re-assemble. I later found out what he was talking about, but now that I have this great new info, I plan to change my ways.

thanks JD
