JIm, Yes, the acetone will turn brown. I've let a stock soak for over a week to remove oil. Let it dry an equivalent time afterward before finishing. Just in case. Save the brown acetone for other stocks or ...more likely, a cleanup job on something really dirty. I use the old brown acetone for most little jobs, probably more than new acetone.

The week of acetone was up yesterday. Most of the acetone had evaporated even though it was covered with crimped-on foil. I was surprised at how much of the finish remained on the stock(116 year old Lefever). It's in the denatured alcohol now for another week. Thanks again for your help,

Jim Before you soak it just try a rag and some alcohol. I have washed the finish off several Parkers and LC Smiths. If its original it is shellac. bill

Jim,that is why I use a tub with a snap on lid. I have got some water type marks when the acetone evaporated and left the water mark kind of line. With the tub, I really have no evaporation and the weighted stock stays covered with the acetone. It's been working for me on quite a few stocks.

Don Noland/ Jimmy W. I just posted it directly from where I had saved it years ago. I did not mention it as Wonko's method because I assumed it was on there somewhere. Not sure how many people here would remember him anyway. I certainly did not mean to present it as anything other than his. I still touch base with him on occasion but only once or twice since Bill Wise left us. The board was a lot more fun and informative then.
