Hi all, I'm new to your fourm and looking for some more information on an old NR Davis & Sons 12 ga. What information I have found so far comes from the Blue Book of Gun Values. The gun is in very good condition, case colors are excellent, bores are bright, bluing on the barrel is good with no dinks or dents. The wood is better than very good but not excellent, and it has very nice checkering on the splinter forearm and butt stock, and looks to not have been refinished. The condition and price is what sold me on the gun. I have really enjoyed your posts and information on this site, and thanks for any input on my old Davis.

Joe:

Never had one and never seen one in the condition of yours. Can't help but welcome to the board. Post early and often and you'll get some hits and more information than you could hope for elsewhere and very possibly some new friends.

per http://www.briley.com/articles/grampas_shotgun.html Crescent Fire Arms of Norwalk, Conn and H.∓D. Folsom of NY merged with N.R.Davis around 1900 becoming Crescent-Davis. A N.R.Davis gun in the condition you describe would be exceptional. Can you post pics?

This is the best site I've found for information on Davis shotguns.

N.R. Davis of Assonet, Mass., started in the 1850's manufacturing muzzleloaders and one of America's earliest breech-loading doubles, a sliding breech pin-fire. By WW-I time the Warner Arms Corp had bought into N.R. Davis and in 1917 bought out the Davis family and by 1919 moved the entire assets of N. R. Davis to Norwich, Conn. They continued to make doubles under the N.R. Davis name and the hammerless models were named "MAXIM," "AJAX," and "EXPERT." Eventually Savage acquired Davis-Warner and about the same time Crescent Arms Company. They then advertised a line of Crescent-Davis guns in the back of their Stevens wholesale price list, even behind the "cheaper than Stevens" Springfield line, through the late 1930's and early 40's.

There is an excellent article on N.R. Davis in The Gun Report, Volume 35, Number 11, April 1990, by Cdr Gunther who often contributes at this board. I believe they sell back issues -- phone (309) 582-5311.

Craig and I both have them. Mine is a 20 and I believe his is a 12. I love my 20. I paid $200.00 for it. The wood was tattered. The barrels were completely white.50% case color on the receiver. I restored it to it's old glory and it is a fine little gun. Mine is stamped "N.R. Davis & Sons." Their motto was "As good as it gets"

I have an N.R. Davis Hy-Power. It's a Warner-Davis made gun circa 1925. The Hy-Power was the 3" chambered 12 gauge long range duck gun.

Hi doubletrouble,

Setting you straight for???

I had a nice Thanksgiving Day, shot a few rounds trap (boy am I rusty). Ate some turkey, sweet per-taters, cranberries and pie!

Text of N.R. Davis 1925 Ad:

Davis HY-POWER chambered for 3” shells, kills ducks at 80 yds. Made in 12 gauge only, 30 and 32” barrels. Price $35.00.
Davis PREMIER made in 12-16 and 20 gauges. 26-28-30-32 inch barrels. Price $30.00.
Davis MAXIMUM, specially built and choked for short range and Target 70% at 35 yds. 12 ga.-24 in. barrels. 16 ga.-22 in. barrels. 20 ga.-20 in. barrels. Record of 21 successive wing shots and 21 killings have been made with one of these guns. Price $30.00.
These guns are highly finished. REMEMBER you need not pay over $35.00 for a Long Range Duck Gun if you select a Davis. Every gun Proof Tested.

If you want a plain low-priced Gun write us or ask your dealer about Davis AJAX. Built expressly for the man who wants a good, plain, reliable knock-about Gun at a low price. Made in 12-16 and 20 gauge. Every Davis Gun, whether lowest or highest priced, is proof tested with an excessive load. Davis Guns were established in 1853 by N. R. Davis and are going stronger than ever in 1925. This 72 years of service and durability should mean something to every gun buyer.

Glad you had a good time. first time here with my family in 20 years! It was great! The boys and I went out and sighted our rifles after dinner...deer season ya know. Had a great time! Setting me straight on what you had. I thought it was just a 12 ga. but it is a "special" 12 gauge.
