They believe that in New York there is a grand opening for a house of this kind that will supply consumers at popular prices, and they propose to fill the bill. As to their reputation for fair dealing, they refer to the Winchester Repeating Arms Co., New Haven and New York; Colt's Fire Arms Co., Hartford; Parker Bros., Meriden and New York, manufacturers; and Schoverling, Daly & Gales, Hartley & Graham, John P. Moore's Sons, and H. Boker & Co , the leading wholesale houses in New York; also, the Merchants' Exchange National Bank. Pete Ken, good point on the adjacent address. In 1873 Schovering & Daly acquired the rights to Ballard's rifle patent and had John Mahlon Marlin to manufacture them. Charles Daly in 1881 was The Marlin Fire Arms Company 1st president. Then in 1888 S, D&D acquired the gunsmithing & firearms merchant John P. Moore(began circa 1823)/John P. Moore's Sons( http://www.cornellpubs.com/Templates3/Moores%201886.htm ). So Daly, Overbaugh, etc. were in a common sphere of interest but I'm not exactly sure which part each played. Kind Regards, Raimey rse

I would like to see a pin map of Manhattan showing all of the well known gun houses and corporate offices.

Very interesting discussion.
One interesting note, Pete mentioned Overbaugh moved premises to from 267 Boradway to 300 Broadway during his NY stay. That would have put him literally next door to SD&G who occupied 302 and 304 Broadway during this period. Not a stretch to figure how he might have tapped SD&G's existing gun making connections in Prussia. Ken, Just to document the source: New York History By Alexander Clarence Flick, New York State Historical Association, New York State Historical Association Meeting On page 216 "Overbaugh, C.E, New York City 1880's At 300 Broadway. A specialist in remodeling Sharps breechloading target rifles, and a fine workman."Almost didn't post it because I thought it too trivial. Pete

Thanks to all. I'll take the Overbaugh out this afternoon while working on a few birds training my 4 month old GWP. Sounds like there were lots of SD&G intrigues.

Pete, As long as your looking Sellers list Overbaugh & Stanton 1862-1864 and Overbaugh & Daly 1884.
Overbaugh was at Poughkeepsie , NY 1862-1864 Philadelphia, PA 1873-1875 New York, NY 1876-1890 Bayonne, NJ 1890-1898
He also had two patents 498,856 & 610,660 Mike thanks for that. Here is what I have so far: Born 1844 NY 1860 Census Dutchess, New York. Stanton is in the same rooming house. Each has $200 in property 1889-90 Jersey City Directory, p440, gunsmith, resides 117 Forest 1891-93 Jersey City Directory, sporting goods, resides 117 Forest 1900 Census - Manhattan, New York posssible 1910 Census - Montgomery, New York retired, married to Anna, lives next to his brothers Nelson and George. possible 1919 Buried Minaville, New York I would like to substantiate the Sellers note on Philadelphia. That could tie him to the Golchers. Right after that (1877), Thomas L Golcher is listed in a SD add. So perhaps Overbaugh was the initial Linder contact for TL Golcher. Pete

Does anyone have any info on Edward N. Lindner in New York City who evidently had several gun patents between 1854 to during the American Civil War. He had a patent on March 29, 1859 for a breechloading rifle that I think may have been made by the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company with either his name or patent number on it? I'm curious if there was info that Daly knew Edward Lindner or if Lindner was directly connected to the Lindners of Germany.
Kind Regards,

Here's a source that gives Lindner as being from Germany, along with some of his patents: http://www.antiquearms.org.nz/art_lind.asp . On some "Fire Arms" patents Charles Daly was a witness but I checked some of Edward N. Lindner's and didn't find Daly's signature. Edward Lindner died in Germany on February 17, 1870 and wasn't paid anything by Amoskeag according to the New Hampshire Supreme Court: http://ipmall.info/hosted_resources/unfair_competition/unfcmp_18.pdf . Kind Regards, Raimey rse

Raimey, interesting find. Do we have anything connecting Edward Lindner to H A Lindner or his father ?
By the way, I shot the Overbaugh this weekend and it performed fine. I was especially taken by the ease and smoothness with which the hammers were cocked. Much easier than most hammer guns I have here.

Nothing at all. Same last name and expired in the same country. I would like to guess it was Georg's uncle, but nothing as of yet. Edward N. Lindner had some connections to Prussia as he used the term to define a needlefire rifle in some of his patents. I was really looking for something that connected Daly to Edward Lindner but I can't tell if the crossed paths in New York. But Daly almost had to know of Edward N. Lindner.
Kind Regards,
