My Grulla pigeon gun doesn't always eject from the right barrel. Doesn't happen with light dove loads, but with 1 1/8 oz., 2 3/4" steel loads (the lightest I could find), evidently the recoil trips the ejector sear. Please recommend any and all gunsmiths who you feel would be good to fix this. I am hoping to just send the forearm, but that probably won't be the case. I'll probably wait until after duck season since I really don't eject shells anyway; I just want the gun to work as it should.
Thanks! Joe

Hi Joe, I'd just check around, you could try Champlin Arms. JJ seems to be a top notch smith with a good Rep. He reblackened a set of bbls for me and did an excellent job.

Good Luck!!!

Greg

Joe,
Usually when someone post a question like this they'll get three pages of answers, I dont know what the deal is.

JJ Perodeau is good, no make that excellent
Jack Rowe is on the level but not sure if he's still "doing it"
NECG does alot of repair work on Spanish guns, they can help you out too, they've done warranty work for me on a AyA #2 with ejector problems...gun was back in a week and worked flawlessly.

If it was my gun...I would probably send it to NECG for the work.

Hope this helps,
Dustin

Thanks, Dustin. I recently bought an AyA which had been back to NECG for warranty work. I'll see how the previous owner felt about the work. I was told by William Larkin Moore (where I bought it) that they use Keith Kearcher. Am also considering him.

I think that the Basque guns have been around long enough that most gunsmiths with good reputations are capable of doing the work. Much depends upon personal preferences for this kind of thing.

For example, Nick Makinson will be more than able to do the work but he is a firm believer in making sure the entire system of the gun is working well. On these guns, Nick is of the opinion that a sticking ejector may be more of a symptom than just an isolated incident. So far, I've done it both ways and I'd have to say Nick has been right.

So, depends on how much you want to spend and how long you are prepared to be without the gun.

NECG would also get my nod as would Del Whitman for what is essentially a metal issue.

Otherwise, I'm hearing too many stories of smiths going to semi-retirement or having large backlogs to give a host of names.

Grulla, being of an English pattern, I'd think Kirk Merrington would be a good bet as well.
