Jim, I've got a mid-sixties, 12 ga. Lightning Super to which a previous owner added Briley thinwalls. Must take a look at late30s "twin-single" and see what they did at that date.

I have them in all shapes. This one has a short extension and they come in various lengths and naturally shapes. Of all the ones in this set I have only used a few.

I also but I don't have the neat ring to screw them into. Definite shortage of Starrett, Brown&Sharpe around here but a lot of Harbour Freight Wang Dang Fu. Maybe an old Mauser vernier caliper here someplace but my eyes aren't up to that.

I think if you clean of the old patina with a sanding block or steel wool you'll probably see the flats that were filed. One exception to what you said is that I don't think "most" doubles have space or land between the barrels unless they've been cut. Most that I've seen are touching even though not usually filed flat as yours are. Having actual space between the muzzles is usually a sign they've been cut(shortened).
