Have a couple nice vintage Remington pumps, [early 50's 870, and a beautiful model 17, both with solid ribs] One has a Poly and the other a Mighty Choke. I have it in my mind to replace with screw in style chokes. How did they put the pickle on the end?? Randy

the only ones I have pulled off were soldered, there may be other methods too such as threading, I'm unsure.

polychokes were usually threaded. not sure if they ever offered a soldered on version tho i've modified some and put them on that way. they're tight too. i've always resorted to using my rifle barrel vise to remove them. tried to get a pachmayr power-pak removed from a stub a while back and never did get it off. didn't try heat so i've no idea how it was installed.

As I remember (from quite some time ago)The barrel OD is reduced and a threaded sleeve is soldered in place.Before answering I went looking for a Poly Choke demo barrel from where I used to work but couldn't find it. I must have put it where it was safe.

Brian, Anyone can ride on a motorcycle, but you are one of the few that can take a tank for a ride through the neighborhood and down to the local "Stop and Go" for snacks. Keep safe, brother. Make sure you and your men have done the voting thing. If O'bama gets in you may have to trade your black rifle in for a wrist rocket and a garbage can lid for body armor. And, Of the candidate choices, Sarah Palin may be the only one to have the shooting skills to cover your back. Randy

As I recall if installed to "Factory Specs" a Poly had the bbl itself threaded, A Cutts had a threaded adapter Silver Soldered to the bbl & a Herter Vari-Choke had a reduced dia turned a little back of the muzzle. A split threaded ring was then placed in this area & the choke threaded on to it, locking the ring in place. I can't say about any other brands.

Winchester skeet grades of the late 40s early 50s with the pickle factory installed had a large base collar turned on the barrel from oversize forging. Cutts seated against the collar but I don't know if the thing threads on. There is a setscrew in the compensator and witness marks on the comp and the collar for alignment. Not the main interest in Remington Country of course.
