As A kid I remember guys talking about using old baby bottle nipples over the end of the barrel.

Maybe they we just had some other serious problems but it sure sounded funny to me.

I don't do muzzleloaders that much. And I know I don't get out much, but I have never seen/heard regular rifles covered with anything. How come?

A little water down the barrel would likely be worse for black powder than for a metallic cartridge.

It's smart to keep snow out of your barrel. I use duct tape when hunting in snow.

Must say I use a little electrical tape for my double (cartridge) rifle when in any kind of bush.

I never cover my shotguns either. I guess I'm just old fashioned- I hold the barrels down if it's raining or snowing and don't poke it into the brush when I walk through it. Now, for muzzleloaders, I can see it. But like I said, I never was in to muzzleloaders, so that's why I asked. On the show I was watching, they weren't in the woods. They took a boat down the river, then walked along the river bank. So, I couldn't see any reason to cover the barrel to keep the brush out. And it wasn't raining or snowing. But, thanks for the answers. Good luck.

Common practice hunting on skis here 150 miles north of the Arctic Circle. Rifle or shotgun barrels bulge with just a small amount of snow inside

The one and only time I've hunted with a semi, having to work my way through half a mile of 10-feet reeds (or whatever you call the damned tall impenetrable watery vegetation), and not even being able to open the breech and see it things were OK inside, and the gun being not mine - now that made me feel some sort of muzzle protection might be useful sometimes. Next morning I took the same route with me sbs and forgot about it

I heard that's not good 'cause it might cause holes in your condoms.
