Yes and no. I have hunted a little bit of public land in South AL and the Florida Panhandle but you are lucky to find more than 1-2 coveys a day. The best I have ever heard was 6 coveys. Usually you can expect 0-2.

I mostly hunt private land. Much of it the same type cover.... classic Southern piney woods.

Here are a few more photos....

A single pinned down in the thick stuff on the edge of this small cotton patch... come to think of it, they are always in the thick stuff!

Longleaf Pine clear-cut... always a good place to find a covey or two...

POINT!

Classic Southern Pinewoods

Hunting Snipe...

Old-field pines... they differ from longleaf woods a little. Not as open with a different type ground cover. Grow in... you guessed it, old farm fields.

Good luck Mike & Joe

I don't thing that we are going to have very many quail here in SE NM. I do have a OK pheasant trip planned and will probably make a trip to Texas.

I expect to see you boys if we put on a SXS and pump shoot here in the early spring!!

You won't find much of it above Montgomery.

We moved eight coveys and put a batch of birds in the bag.
Here is Dubya doing the “Just Booted High Step”.

He also walked on his front paws like a circus dog – he is certainly the most entertaining.

It was warm enough the dogs overheated quickly. The morning humidity seemed particularly hard on them. The afternoon was drier and they seemed to hit their stride. Here are Molly and Belle in the stock tank before lunch:

And later in the afternoon Dubya and Belle cooled off in the Red River (Salt Fork):

First here is Joe Wood with my son in the background. Joe hunted with a wonderful John Blisset hammergun, twelve gauge with 30” Damascus barrels and weighs 6lbs 4 ounces. Joe shot blackpowder shells.

Here is my Purdey with the first Bob I took with it. I was shooting black powder in brass shells with 1 oz of 7-1/2s . I wasn’t sure I got him as it was hard to see through the smoke but little Molly found and fetched him. She had had a beautiful point on the covey and I wish I had taken the time to snap a picture. Taylor and Joe were back at the truck resting (Girly Men).

Here is Joe’s Blisset with a very unlucky bird that flew into his shot string. I love that gun and have tried to buy it from him:

Here is a picture of me with my dogs Beau and Dubya and the Purdey 14 bore. Signed autographed pictures are available free. You will need to send $50 to cover postage and handling:

This is my 27 year old son, Taylor. He is carrying an AYA 30 gauge sidelock with 30” barrels, choked cylinder and 20 thou. It weighs 5-13oz.

I fed, housed, and clothed him for 23 years and then he went to work for my competitor taking the bread out of my mouth (see his hat). I bought him the damn gun too! He is fine shot and handsome as can be – a chip off of the old block.

My sweet wife of 28 years is an experienced and excellent game cook and made Sunday Supper with our mess of birds. We had fried quail, mashed potatoes, cream gravy (made from the quail pan drippings of course), green beans, and her world class pecan pie.

Here are the quail cooking in the cast iron pan:

The lovely Ruth Anne holding my pecan pie:

And finally my plate:

Best,

Mike

Great pictures Mike!!!!
Some of those pictures are defintely mouth watering and after seeing pictures of birds prepared like that I think your wife should write her own cook book!!!
And maybe you could convince her to include that recipe for the pecan pie, also!!!
My dad always said, "Good pecan pie is hard to find but, when found, must be eaten"
You guys are the best!!!
