I just purchased a CE grade 1894 that has ordinance steel barrels that are clean with no pitting. The action has nice C grade engraving, but no case coloring left. The gun has a straight grip and retains its original butt plate. Additionally, the gun has a single trigger. But, the gun has a few issues….. The rib is loose and needs to be stripped and relayed. The checkering is all there, but well worn and needs refreshing. Finally, some past owner pushed their initials into the butt stock with a blunt tool (not cut) on either side of the stock near the action. I hope this can be steamed partially out….

I have $400 in this firearm. Is it worth fixing/restoring?

Thanks,
Daniel

I'm far rom an expert here but from your description I think you have a good candidate for restoration. I take it this is an ejector gun and,if so, are they in proper operating condition? I'm sure others will pipe in and make specific recomendations on relaying the rib and freshening up the checkering.
I can comment one one required fix and that's the letters pressed into the stock. These should steam out with some patience on your part however when you are done the stock will probably have to be refinished.

It is certainly worth restoring. C grade Remingtons are pretty rare and nice guns to boot. If you dont want to fix it I would be interested in it. Ross

Jim,

The ejectors work well. Thank all of you for your advice.

Here is a pic of my CE and CEO. Does yours have engraving like one of these? Ross

My gun would most closely ressemble the lower gun. Remington Arms Co. is in a long straight banner, without the pronounced banner "tails" of your gun. Instead of the "tails" my gun has a bit more engraving around the banner. The engraving around the hindge pin of my gun is not like either one of your guns.

Additionally, was the single trigger on my gun a factory option or was it a later addition?

Thanks,
Daniel

Single triggers werent offered by Remington though they were working on one(i belive) it is probably aftermarket. Post some pics of your gun and the trigger and someone here will probably be able to tell you what it is. You can email me the pics if you have trouble posting and I will post them for you. Ross

C.E. DeLong of Hot Springs, Arkansas, had three single trigger patents -- 670,100, 690,243, and 699,291 -- where the drawings were on a Remington action, and 690,243 was assigned to Remington Arms Co.

E.D. Fulford of Utica, New York, had three single trigger patents -- 704,025, 749,687, and 751,979 -- where the drawings were on a Remington action.

E.H. Thorneley of Ilion, New York, had two single trigger patents -- 568,285 and 673,803 -- where the drawings were on a Remington action.

G. E. Witherell of Hartford, Connecticut, had five single trigger patents -- 697,061, 767,537, 808,890, 808,964, and 836,167 -- all assigned to Remington Arms Co. though the first and last appear to be drawn on a Syracuse Arms Co. action.

Could you post some pictures so we can see the trigger on your gun? In addition to guns found with "factory" experimental triggers there have been several companies that offered aftermarket single triggers -- Philadelphia Single Trigger Co. of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Lancaster Arms Co. of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; and Miller single Trigger Mfg. Co. of Millersburg, Pennsylvania.

Here is a possibly a Lard single trigger on a Remington that someone sent me pictures of quite a while ago --
