Some .22 rifles had wullnut stock, it's definetly wallnut on photo. But finish is not original I believe. Usually stock is oiled and has nice satin finish.

i knew from the grain structure it wasn't birch and it sure looked like walnut, especially under a magnifying glass. but i realized it could be some indigenous hardwood to Russia that had a good color and grain.

at least if someone refinished it, they did a passable job and didn't just spray or brush some glop on.

thanks again,
roger

wolf is one of the kinds i bought. and it of course said "made in Germany" on the box and was - other than the box itself and the headstamp - as close to identical as you can tell visually, including the tray the rounds rested in as the RWS i bought. word around here is the wolf is as good as anything going. for what it costs.

Geno, my compliments. someone who really cared what they were making built these. totally free of machine marks anywhere, slick as glass. i've got 5 22's including a 541-T and an Anschutz and they're all just round bar stock receivers. the remington - as good as it is - is rough as a cobb on the inside compared to this one. the anschutz is as slick as this one. looking at the grain in a digital photo, it is pretty obvious it has had a coat of some spray finish applied.
