Hello gentlemen:

I hope you can help me to identify this kind of mechanism and also, if possible, the maker of what I think is a JABC (or something like that when you refer to a poor quality Belgian shotgun).
As you can see in the photos, the closing system is in the forend and ther is no wooden parts in it.
The shotgun in question is a 20 ga. 65 mm SxS with external hammers and in the barrels have the next inscriptions:

On the rib: C. SYMPHORIEN St LAURENT DU MARONI

On the left barrel: Made in Belgium

You can not separate the barrels from the mechanism because you can not remove the metalic forearm.

Any help will be usefull and enlightenenig.

Thank you as always,

Best regards,

Jose

Not sure about C. SYMPHORIEN still looking.

Saint-laurent-du-maroni, is in French Guiana.

Have you actually tried to take the barrels off? I had an old Belgium gun very similar to yours, (only not nearly as nice!). On mine there was a swing lever, underneath the opening lever, that allowed removal of the barrels. I see such a lever in the photo you presented.
Has this gun been restored? The gun looks very nice. The one I had was definitly a JABC, but yours looks to be a higher grade gun then mine.
I've attached a picture of my JABC

There is another swing lever towards the front underneath the end of the locking lever. You swing that lever to the side and it unlocks the barrels. I don't have the gun any more or I'd take a picture of it with the barrels taken off.

The action is called Lefaucheux. It was used by many makers including Husqvarna.

Here is a Husqvarna Model 17

Yours may not be a Belgian gun, but a gun with Belgian made barrels. A large part of the Belgian gun trade went into exporting barrels and parts. The only way to be sure, is to take the barrels off and look for the proof marks.

The shotgun belongs to a friend.
Right now we know the name of the closing system (Lefaucheux).
I will try to remove the forearm and barrels with the advise of Rockdoc because right now the shotgun is at my home.

I am just a beginer regard apretiation of old firearms, but I am almost sure that the barrels are refinished because they have a perfect blueing; the woodstock have an horrendus yellowish varnish finish (done with a brush!!!), but the sidelocks are pretty much original because the CC are near to zero in the rear zone, where are in touch with the right hand, but some colors in the fron part.

I still wait for more answers from the knowledge people of this forum.

Regards,

Jose

In the second picture PeteM took you can see the inside of the barrel locking device (where the screw is located). The lever rotates (swings sideways) from that point.

Sr. Jose,

From the pictures and your description, I am guessing that the gun was restored at some point. The yellow is old varnish. You can take it off easily with some denatured alcohol.

Follow Rockdoc's advice and take off the barrels. Turn the barrels over and look near the lug for any proof marks. Also, check the receiver, where the barrels lock down. If there are any marks, take a picture and post it here. Some one should be able to make some sense out of them. The name alone is intriguing.
