I note that handloading is uncommon in the UK - hence SB is considering factory ammo. "Known low pressure loads with light shot charges," would be a more suitable statement for the USA where many are knowledgable handloaders. Also, 70 mm (2 3/4") cases are acceptable when loaded to KNOWN low pressure. The thing to not get confused is that SAAMI loads are low pressure when using light shot charges. If you propose to shoot an older gun, you must know the pressure of the proposed load is within the design envelope and current condition of the gun.

When I posted an inch-increment w/t survey of damascus bores, most of the guys here stuck their noses in the air and said it was a waste of time. Thanks for congratulating me on my practise however abominable my preach. In fact, one gentlemen who had "examined hundreds" stated that he had never seen .1" w/t in the major bore--more usually .080" he said. He must have been an adherent of the 9" lick and promise technique.

Gentlemen, once again thank you , I sent a nice old Jeffreys sxs out to be checked out , the rt barrel was honed .020" & the left to.030" , the smith felt .020" was to thin (6 inches from the muzzle) and .030" is minimum for saftey. The gun is just a "Farmer Gun " & not worth putting alot of money into , but I think it might just end up as a sometimes grouse gun with low preasure loads.

I get A message that several of you are shooting guns with less than .020 wall thickness, when the thin area is out near the muzzle. I have a 32 in. specialty Grade 20 Ga. Elsie That has .017 and .015 Wall thickness 10 inches back from the muzzle. some previous owner has draw filed the bottoms of the barels to clean up scratches or dings. Then sold the gun to me. I shot the gun on several occasions. then sent the gun to a gunsmith for a loose rib repair. and he informs me that the gun is not safe to shoot due to less than .020 thickness in the barels. After reading this thread I think I will shoot the old Elsie some more. Thanks everyone for the good read.

Has anybody measured the wall thickness on new "quality" doubles? and what were the measurements
