You see this on a rack in a shop, no name. It's on consignment and neither the owner or dealer know anything about it but they are asking significantly less than a G&H, what would you do? What is it other than a Springfield?

I don't know enough about the various makers to suggest a specific name, but IMO the stockmaker was an expert and the rifle is an early one. The schnabel, the swivel eyes and the early long-slide 48 are indicators, and what are those suspicious-looking shaded areas on each side of the stock placed about even with the ejection port? BTW the rear open sight is installed backwards and is entirely too close to the shooter's eye, quite curious, as though the sight had been installed by a non-shooter. One thing I do know for sure however, I'd like to own that rifle!
Regards, Joe

The inletting is beginning to make me think Wundhammer or some other German/European trained smith.

There were quite a few European trained smiths. Of course, the inletting wasn't revealed until later. The key is identifying it by the first 7 pictures. I'm like most and had no clue.

Question: the last photo of the inletting seems to show that there's a gap between the rear of the magazine box and the front of the wood behind it. Such a gap is generally considered a serious no-no since the large flat surface is intended to serve as a secondary recoil support surface. Tight fitting here, even though out of sight and frequently ignored, is considered an indication of expertise. Photos frequently 'show' things that really aren't there, though, so I'm respectfully asking for clarification.
Thanks, Joe

Good question Joe, it's been a few years since I took those. I'm now curious myself and will have to take it apart and take a top view. I do remember the magazine box was so tight I left it in.

The shape of the buttstock, cheekpiece, location of the comb nose, checkered sidepanels, shape of the schnable and the inletting makes me think Wundhammer. However the checkering lines on the grip are straight instead of following the panel curve like Michael showed in an earlier post. Still it looks like a later Wundhammer or someone with similar training influenced by his rifles.

I'll let this go for a little bit and see if anyone has any other ideas.....but I'll admit you guys are good!

One of my questions was "what would you do"? Perhaps Michael will chime in and tell us what HE saw. Yep, the first thing I did was call him when I saw it.

I'll post a little more of the inletting later.
