I really like the shotgun butt and the minimum drop at heel, it reminds me of some of the English guns and rifles I've seen. Unusual for a US maker but quite attractive and, I would assume, also quite comfortable to shoot. I like well-stocked M/L's and this is IMO one of the best-looking I've ever seen from any vintage American maker. You are indeed fortunate. Regards, Joe

Thanks, It a super nice little rifle with a barrel about 25" long, the caliber is around 46 and cut with six grooves about the same width as the lands for round ball or picket. One of the amazing things about this rifle is the bore is flat perfect like the day it left Mr. Schaefer's shop.

It sits in the rack next to my Schaefer shotgun, how would you like to file out those hammers?

Michael, That is a mighty fine rifle indeed. I am wondering if you can describe the rear sight. Is it some sort of iris aperture?
I don't see a caliber for it either. It looks like a nice deer rifle to me.

The rear of the tang sight unscrews and I suspect it was made this way so the aperture size could be changed. I believe that this rifle would have been delivered to the customer cased with all the tools needed and possibly different apertures. The caliber is about 46-47 caliber.

Another reason I like William R. Schaefer was because he let a kid shoot his rifle at the range in Boston. That kid was A.O. Niedner.

Thanks for the follow up. I thought, with all that knurling, that it might be internally adjustable. What a beautiful rifle indeed.
Thanks again, Brent
