Rifle bore of an old German hammer drilling is nominal 7mm (measured about 7.2mm groove dia.). Rifle barrel is marked 248 - does this number indicates the caliber?
Thanks,
Jani

.0355" difference between bore & groove dia's (.2835 (7.2mm) - .248) would be an awful lot. Is this a 7x57R, if so I would think bore size would have been no smaller than about .010-.012" at the very most, likely less as would have been for jacketed bullets. When you say "Old German" I would presume this gun would pre-date it being the proof date of Feb 1948. Of the two old drillings I have one is a pre-1912 & has the bore marked by the old gauge system & the other is from 1913 (9.3x72R) & has bore marked in mm's. I don't recall ever seeing a German rifle with bore marked in decimal inches, though they could exist.

This hammer drilling is early 20th cent. Caliber on recent bill of sale (by a German gun dealer) is 7x57R, and the gun chambers it. What I would like to know is if the number "248" corresponds to the 7mm caliber in a way. I need this information for gun registration. This number is just under Crown/U so I guess it was struck by proofhouse. - Jani

Is it a Collath hammer drilling possibly with a proprietary chambering of 7.3X57R Teschner, or have you done a chamber cast? If it's a pre-1910, more than likely it was a black powder cartridge with a lead bullet without a jacket, unless stamped so. I think Mauser was driving the 7x57R train in 1892 and sometime thereabouts the Brits had the 0.275 Rigby as the rimless version.

I'd say the 248 is a proofhouse number.

Kind Regards,

Raimey

Not a Collath, but a simple side lever hammer gun marked D.H. on rifle barrell and Oldorf - Lübeck on rib. Rifle barrel is also marked 2,3 g G.B.P. / St.m.G. so it was made for smokeless powder and jacketed bullets.
No chamber cast yet as I'm in a hurry for the registration.

Jani could it be the date of manufacture? i.e. Feb 1948. That'what I'd think it was.

Mike, I don't think so, the gun looks quite old, circa 1910-20.

Hello JC,
good to hear from you. Yes I still buy a drilling in Germany from time to time.
