I must have been good this year, Santa placed this 1951 model 70 at a local pawn shop a few days ago. After a quick check with Mr. Petrov on the price I ran back to the shop to pick her up and take her home! I will be leaving for a hunt next week so we will see what I can do with her. -JB

A fine rifle indeed! I've been hoarding an NOS M70 early-50s date 270 Win sporter barrel (bbl only) for some time now, waiting for the proper use for such a beast. IMO the 3 classic M70 calibers are 220 Swift, 270 WCF and 375 H&H. Can't go wrong with any of those! 22 Hornet is also excellent but is also associated with several fine early rifles other than M70s. My last M70 270 would put 5 150-gr Nosler Partitions into less than 1 MOA at over 2950 fps and was a heckuva rifle, I hope your M70 gives you just as much pleasure. Regards, Joe

That is nice looking rifle. I would have to say .30-06 is the most classic caliber in ole' Model 70 rifle. Right behind that would be now almost extinct .300 H&H.

JB, Pre64 Model 70's are very nice rifles indeed and yours is especially nice. You are fortunate.
JDSteele, I agree with your favorite choice of M70 calibers. Now, if you had to live with only one of the three, which would it be; .220 Swift, .270 or the .375. My choice is the Swift. JTL

I had a pre-war one of these in 220 Swift and so accurate. Dated I think around 1935. Had Not English Make Stamped on it and I sold it thirty years ago to a fried who still has it. Fitted case as well. The crazy thing is I was at an auction in London and I was bidding on a cased and scoped 6.5 x 54 Mannlicher which I won and it was only when I went to pay for the Mannlicher that I found out the Winchester came with it.It had come from the estate of a Colonel in the British Army and the two rifles were sold as one lot. I have often thought if you could only have two rifles what a good pair these two made.

Hey, J.B., one of my pet peaves is people posting eye candy without posting the caliber! Those ctgs. LOOK like '06s, but could ya tell us or show the whole ctg? (They might be the apparently now-despised "Super 30"!).
I for one wouldn't kick a 300 H&H out of bed....How the hell many of these "new" 300 mags do we really need, anyway? Most people only need one 300--a 300 Savage. The rest could probably "make do" with an H&H and some rapid fire practice, which would be one hell of a lot "cheaper and funner" than a new "short action" rifle. (Isn't shooting more fun than buying? There must be something wrong with me....end rant).
ANY high-condition pre-64 Model 70 is a gem; enjoy it in the new year!

That's a great rifle! I've been hunting with a pre 64 Model 70 (in 270 cal.) for over 30 years, with success, pride, and great memories. It's the only bolt gun I own.

Thanks everyone, I sure hope it shoots as good as it looks/feels. I will adjust the trigger tonight before heading to the range this weekend.
Mike, Sorry it is in fact an 06 which I thought would allow me to use the rifle for pretty much anything I will ever hunt. -JB
