I have a Winchester Model 21, 16 gauge, with factory 3 inch chambers. Does anyone have a line on where a box of ammo could be purchased?

Collector ammo was sold on ebay until a short time ago. Maybe one of our readers knows where all that ammo went.

Sometime in the mid 1970's I was at a gun shop & a gentleman brought in a fired empty 16ga 3" shell he had picked up while hunting. It was a Remington SP plastic & the load marking stated 3-1¼-7½. I never saw any of these on the market, so assume they were being experimented with. It was found on what is called Keith Springs Mountain in Franklin Co, TN.
Note, correction to load. This shell case was marked 3-1½-7½, not 1¼oz as stated, I hit the wrong fraction button.

None of my collection of old ammo catalogues and literature offer a 3-inch 16-gauge shell much after WW-I. Where did the 3-inch shells for those few Model 21 16-gauge guns with 3-inch chambers come from? The one offering of a 3-inch (or 2 7/8 inch) 16-gauge shell I find in the years of the Model 21 is a footnote at the bottom of the Winchester Leader page in the 1934 Winchester catalogue #89. None of the other 16- or 20-gauge shells are offered in extra-length cases, Leader Super Speed, Repeater Super Speed, Repeater, Ranger, or NuBlack. The 3-inch 16-gauge shell Stadt shows on page 159 of his book is a Leader. The only 16-gauge load given for the Leader shell is 2 3/4 dram equiv. of standard smokeless powder and 1 ounce of shot. Meanwhile the Super Speed 16-gauge is offered in either a 2 9/16 or a 2 3/4 inch shell with a max charge of progressive burning powder and 1 1/8 ounce of shot. If you could buy the ammo, as indicated above, it'd be collector stuff and way too expensive to shoot. Just shoot the standard 2 3/4" shells.

Thanks for the help! The gun is unfired, and I am looking for collector grade ammunition to go with the gun. If anyone runs into a box of this stuff I will gladly pay a "finders fee".

I will be happy to send pictures. Cody has information on the gun either side of mine, but unfortunately nothing on my gun. The gun is truly rare in that it has 32 inch barrels full/full, ventilated rib, straight stock, AAA wood, Beavertail forearm, SST, AE, etc.
I bought the gun out of New York, from a collector that in the late 40's and 50's had Winchester build up one of a kind 21's for his collection.
If you are interested, I also have it's twin in a 12 gauge 3 inch "Duck" grade that weighs 7Lbs 11 oz. Lon
