I am considering consigning a gun with Mr. Drake. Has anyone had any negative/positive experiences with him.
Regards,
Max

Several years ago I consigned a double rifle with Mr. Drake. Seven months later he had still not listed it in any of his publications or web site. Multiple efforts at communication generated promises but no action. I asked that he return it, which he did at maximum expense to me. Make of this what you will.

I heard that at the last Safari International show in Dallas Mr. Drake sold a guy a Fabri over and under. The guy went to shoot it the next day and the bottom barrel would not fire. The customer took it back for a refund and was told sorry no refunds. I do think the gun was at a sale price. The customer had the gun reparied.
This is all second hand info but my source is very reilable.
Regards, Gordon

Sounds like another "Dew-Wings" in the Wings- all the more reason to do business with the Reputables- Safari Outfitters, Champlin, Jack Puglisi (right now having his annual "Jack Off The Rack Sale" for those who like double entendre with their double guns I guess- good one there Jack)--Bill Jacqua, Herschel Chadick- Wonder how much longer Ivory Beads will be around- they have two semi-strikes against them (1) They are in Kalifornia- the fruit cake State (2) Boy Howdy, are their prices high, and try and get a fair trade value for your gun against one of theirs- Time will tell-- RWTF

Why consign it to any one?
Just take some nice pics, write it up, and put it on Gunsamerica, Gunsinternational, and list it here.
If it's good and the price is right, it will sell. I don't think you need the dealers. They're going to list it on one of the sites mentioned above, anyway.

Max, I have bought several guns from Lewis, but I have never consigned anything to him. I have not had any problems with any of the transactions. Drake has a large clientele list and many nice guns never make it to the web site. As with any transaction, put what you expect from him in writing, then proceed accordingly.

I had exactly the same experience as Steve's above. In contrast, my purchases from him have always been first class.

Over the years, I've consigned many guns with reputable dealers, usually with quick, professional results and hassle-free success that was worth the 15% fee. However, I too had a consignment experience like Steve's (probably worse, actually) the one and only time I did business with Lewis Drake & Associates. That doesn't mean their inventory isn't cool, or that you would have a similar experience, but it's always wise to go into these arrangements with both eyes open and your wallet deep in your pocket. A few friends of mine have consinged guns with Charles Schneible at British Sporting Arms in Milbrook, NY, and were pleased.
The only experience I've had with Drake was an attempt to purchase a gun, and it was not pleasent. I never look at his inventory anymore, and I will not do any business with them for any reason whatsoever.

The only experience I've had with Drake was... So let me get this straight: We start with someone who doesn't have a clue about a well-known long-time fine-arms dealer to whom he may (or may not) intend to consign a non-described but seemingly valuable gun...to which someone chimes in that he once consigned a gun, but asked that it be returned, which it was (thus incurring expense)...and still another reports hearsay about a "guy buying a gun" at SCI that may or may not bear any relation to anything...while two others are satisfied with the subject's "first class" efforts when they bought typically expensive guns, but also had the first person's same experience (guns on consignment returned unsold?). Oh! yeah. Then there's an allusion to "De-Wings" and Ivory Beads. So how do we score this? If Dr.Lewis Drake had bought and sold only about a half-dozen guns in the past 15 years that I recall his ads in the DGJ and SSM, and seeing him big as life at top gun shows (gruff and distracted), then a sampling (such as this) of Internet junkies might be instructive. But when you consider how many guns he has had to buy and sell over many years at his level of the fine gun business to keep-on keeping on, and the relative wealth of his clientele, and how fickle people with real money can be...well, methinks that anyone who acts (one way or the other) upon information gleaned from an Internet thread such as this should call me--if and when he gets that valuable gun sold--as I have a bridge for sale somewhere in NYC.
