Franc it's a little better than a 30-30 and almost a 38-55. It's okay for deer at 100 yds or less. A little hard to find and expensive when you do. I have had quite a few and I like it. I have a bullet mold and reload so I save money. It's the most common of the drilling calibers on drillings made before 1950.

Franc,
If you do need that ammo or brass I have a bunch of both from RWS. I don't know the full specs on the stuff but it is a typical 193gr flat nose lead "silver" jacketed (tin jacket?) flat point bullet in a fairly long brass brass case (About 2 7/8" tapered case).
From what I can find available (mostly Sellier & Bellot) it looks like it lists for about 3-5$ a factory loaded round and 2-3$ or so for each brass case. It could sell for less but that is what I found. I've seen a few "out of stock" Norma listings that would probably sell for more.

The 9,3x74R is to muzzleloader what 9,3x72R is to a slingshot. Does this analogy help you? If you like metrics look for something with modern performance levels like: 8x57JRS, 9,3x74R, 7x57R, 6,5x57R,..... More expensive firearm but worth it, trust me.

The 9,3x72R is probably the most common pre-WWII drilling cartridge, typical smokeless powder factory loads give about 2000 fps to a 193 grain bullet, very close in power to a .35 Remington. It is also one of the most variable in case shape and bore size and modern factory ammo doesn't always fit in older chambers, something to keep in mind if you want to shoot one.

Lets not forget horrendously high value for cartridge price/cartridge performance ratio.

I have a nice pre-war Sauer drilling with this caliber rifle barrel. I first bought some DWM loaded rounds with the 193 grain bullet, but have reloaded for it since about 1968 using either the 193 grain RWS or the 200 grain Norma bullets. Recipe is as published by Norma. Basically, it is a 35 Remington. The 9.3mm means it is a 36 caliber. Both shoot a 200 grain bullet at about 2100 fps. Accuracy is outstanding!!!

The calibres Jager mentions are found on later models after standarization. Like Steven said, if it is a pre-WWII version, chances are you'll have some variant of 360 Express. But once you slug the bore, get the correct diameter and obtain some cases, it is a joy to reload due to the straight wall case. You can use black, duplex, filler, smokeless(N140, etc.) and see where the best performace might be. You may find that you can use 0.35 Cal bullest like Sierra Pro-Hunter #2800. I have found that using black powder seems to reduce the life of the case. And it is just simply amazing how Buffalo Arms can take 9.3X74R and convert them into 9.3X72R.
Kind Regards,
Raimey rse

NH? Isn't that Winchester country? How about ole' Mod. 94 and pack of .30-30s from local Walmart. Heck you can get them semi-spitzers with polymer tips from Hornady if you want, but not at Walmart of course. When I needed lil' deer rifle I bought minty Savage 99 EG and entire stock of dusty .300 ammo from local Dick's at $15/box.
