Has anyone ever heard of a MAS double barrel shotgun. A friend of mine has one and wants to sell it to me. It is a 12 gauge field grade model. Are they reliable?

Welcome to the board. Hope you find a home here. There is not much info on this maker other than he was French and worked in the early/middle 1800s. Tell us more of this gun as it has to be other than what we usually see. Best, John

Welcome WB. It's good to have you here as we need more guys that own French guns on this board. The English stuff is becoming a bit loooong in the tusk by now.

You can find some more information here: Manufacture Nationale D’Armes, MAS St Etienne http://www.gournetusa.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=148&SearchTerms=masManufacture Nationale D’Armes was a state owned gun maker. They were primarily a military arms maker. There may be others along with more information. Pete

Hello wburns and welcome,
MAS stands for "MANUFACTURE NATIONALE D'ARMES DE ST-ETIENNE" and the double in question can surely be compared to a Robust, reliable and strong. They do honour their name.
There are several French military arms manufacturers that use acronyms as trade marks such as: MAC - MANUFACTURE D'ARMES à CHATELLERAULT MAT - MANUFACTURE D’ARMES DE TULLE MAB - MANUFACTURE D’ARMES DE BAYONNE MAP - MANUFACTURE D'ARMES DES PYRENEES
Some of them have produced guns for civilian use, of no-frills good quality.

It takes 2 3/4 inch shells, Mono Block, box lock, prince o wales grip, plain walnut wood, sling swivels, extractors. Blueings fair, and so is the case coloring. No engraving. Do you think it is worth 300.00

Hell yes - if the gun is in good shape that is a great price.
I have owned a MAS - a really well built, good handling shotgun.

If I see a gun I like in good shape, I buy it and don't worry about repairs. For the record, I've had no need to repair a gun in more than 65 years of hard gunning---and never gave or threw one away. If you like the gun, buy it and enjoy it. It's an investment in pleasure you won't regret.

NO, but guns for which spare parts are available is not what this board is all about. Are there parts for my trusty 1950 vintage Beretta 424? He no. I read someplace that this is the only model SxS PB that Cole Gunsmithing will not service or repair. Do I give a .... He no.

As for what this board was about I thought it was for finding out information on double barrels such as age, how common, value, etc. and for asking general questions. I did not realize it was offesive to anyone by asking if parts are available. I just did not want to make a bad purchase.

Oh it's not offensive. Three hundred bucks is good price for French Keepers gun in very good mechanical order. I have yet to see basic French piece that's worse then current Remingtonsky or used Eastern Arms, Stevens 311,.....

wburns, don't worry about parts, if an old gun goes on the fritz, a good smith will get her up and running.

wburns - no spare parts that I know off - any will have to be made. For the price - if the gun is in good order you can't go wrong, in my opinion.

I believe there was a concerted effort after 1945, by the various state factories, to help resupplying France with hunting guns, since the German occupation had sequestered and stolen most.
I am presently looking at an MAC gun. Almost all of these MA-* shotguns seem to have been frugal, utilitarian, yet trust-inspiring boxlocks. Old faithfuls, as they are affectionately described today in France.

French boxlocks are interesting. I picked up this one 20 yrs ago for next to nothing, the bottom third of the stock was broken off. I patched it with the bottom third of an old ruined Rem 721 stock and it has been a faithful crappy day waterfowl shotgun. Last year Robust. ![[Linked Image from imagizer.imageshack.com]](https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q70/922/A1jnMK.jpg)
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Just acquired another French 16/65 boxlock, a truly crisp MAC in very good condition. I may have overpaid with 68 €uros though, LOL, but the French charm, you know... 😜🥳 Am now travelling home back in train. No French sparkling there to welcome her, alas...
