Has anyone ever heard of a MAS double barrel shotgun. A friend of mine has one and wants to sell it to me. It is a 12 gauge field grade model. Are they reliable?

Welcome to the board. Hope you find a home here.
There is not much info on this maker other than he was French and worked in the early/middle 1800s.
Tell us more of this gun as it has to be other than what we usually see.
Best,
John

Welcome WB. It's good to have you here as we need more guys that own French guns on this board. The English stuff is becoming a bit loooong in the tusk by now.

You can find some more information here:
Manufacture Nationale D’Armes, MAS St Etienne
http://www.gournetusa.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=148&SearchTerms=mas

Manufacture Nationale D’Armes was a state owned gun maker. They were primarily a military arms maker. There may be others along with more information.

Hello wburns and welcome,

MAS stands for "MANUFACTURE NATIONALE D'ARMES DE ST-ETIENNE" and the double
in question can surely be compared to a Robust, reliable and strong. They do honour
their name.

There are several French military arms manufacturers that use acronyms as trade
marks such as:
MAC - MANUFACTURE D'ARMES à CHATELLERAULT
MAT - MANUFACTURE D’ARMES DE TULLE
MAB - MANUFACTURE D’ARMES DE BAYONNE
MAP - MANUFACTURE D'ARMES DES PYRENEES

Some of them have produced guns for civilian use, of no-frills good quality.

It takes 2 3/4 inch shells, Mono Block, box lock, prince o wales grip, plain walnut wood, sling swivels, extractors. Blueings fair, and so is the case coloring. No engraving. Do you think it is worth 300.00

Hell yes - if the gun is in good shape that is a great price.

I have owned a MAS - a really well built, good handling shotgun.

postoak,
Can you find parts for them if later down the line I might need to make repairs?

If I see a gun I like in good shape, I buy it and don't worry about repairs. For the record, I've had no need to repair a gun in more than 65 years of hard gunning---and never gave or threw one away. If you like the gun, buy it and enjoy it. It's an investment in pleasure you won't regret.
