Tru Oil is a good finish but not great. It is very nice for a beginner and quite repairable when damaged. Just not as durable or water resistant as some. It can be a high or low gloss finish depending on technique. I like it better than Linspeed only because I bought a bad jar of Linspeed years ago that just would not set up. They probably forgot the dryer in that batch, but it made me prejudiced forever after. It's kinda like the folks who won't but another GM car after owning a 1980's model that had the paint come off in sheets. Then they wonder why they lost market share. Duh? ...Anyway, if you can get some samples of several finishes to try on samples of scrap walnut, you can refine your application technique and I guarantee you will be amazed at the different appearance you will see from half a dozen different clear gloss finishes. That way you can decide what you like best or what most closely duplicates the original finish.
