I'm in the midst of restoring four Rem No. 4's with super fiddleback Am Black Walnut stocks, relined bores, re-case color hardening, and rust bluing for each of 4 little grandaughters (ages 2 to 7). The rifles should all look like peas in a pod when I'm done.

My question is what gets color case hardened and what gets blued? I'm assuming the screws are all blued but what about the breech block, hammer, and buttplate?
Thanks
Phil

I would think the screws would have been nitre blued, probably to the bright blue shade that is so pretty against case coloring. I also like to see a straw color nitre finished trigger, but some don't like it.

The screws, block, hammer, trigger and pins get blued. The rest of the receiver parts get cased.-Vall

Thanks for the replies. Vall, that's what I suspected but didn't know for sure.

Looks like everything on mine was blued except the receiver. The block and buttplate are brown, but file-cut easily so not case hardened.

Thanks, Vall. I've got three stocked now. It goes pretty fast since they are simple. However, draw filing the barrels and cleaning up the actions might not go quite as fast, but the grandaughters are still pretty young so I've got a while.

I'm thinking I'll install stock ovals on the bottom of the butts and have their initials along with their birth year engraved on it unless I think of something better. Hopefully this first rifle will get their shooting lives off to a good start.
