Ken Rockwell is a down to business kinda guy. I've followed his website for quite a while now. He's a good source that you can beleive.

Give some thought to all of your potential uses. Make a list in the order of priority of importance to you. Look for a camera that meets those needs.

Example:
shirt pocket sized
Macro function
Long telephoto function
waterproof

What you may find is that some things like waterproof and long telephoto may not be available in a shirt pocket sized camera. So some compromise may be in order. But until you know what you want to do with it, all the cameras start to look the same. After you buy it, shortcomings may become frustratingly apparent, if you didn't expect them.
