For years I have been under the impression that the Niedner .250 barrel on the 99 (which is ser. no. 123811 from 1912) was soldered in place. But in "Mr. Rifleman" Whelen says only that it was "screwed in solid". I asked Russell Gilmore to look, he says there is no evidence of solder at the barrel/receiver jointure - not that anything would show, I suppose, if Niedner did the job. Still, I will stop saying it was soldered. Given due consideration, it does seem like a messy way for two people as sophisticated as Whelen and Niedner to handle that problem. Another point to be made is that in "Mr. Rifleman" Whelen says "Niedner's date on the underside of the barrel is 4-22". Russell says there is no dash between the 4 (which lays horizontally as I have mentioned) and the 22. Maybe Michael can tell us, if it is indeed a Niedner barrel number, the approximate date of manufacture. And also, the date for no. 193, the .410 barrel.
