Had this accident a couple of days back.

A friend was using my shotgun during a duck shoot. Left barrel burst around middle. Thanks God no one hurt.

The gun is DBBL 12 Bore boxlock by Ward & Sons, 32 inch barrels, 2 3/4 chambers. Barrels are fluid steel and were in good condition.

The most apparent reason seems that a wad got stuck in barrel and the guy loaded and fired next shell in that barrel.

Will try to post photos in a couple of days.

Please comment.

I am very glad no one was hurt. Will be interested in seeing the pictures. How old is the gun?

When a shotgut bbl bursts "around middle" about 99.98% of the time it is an obstruction of some sort. Most likely around the remaining ragged edges you can see the tell-tale signs of a bulge, which bulged a little too far. Look for a sort of belling next to the burst. A wad could be the obstruction as well as mud, snow etc allowed to find it's way down the bore. The other .02% are mostly mat'l flaws which finally gave way.

I'd check the empty shells for one with a missing base wad....
