Check out Gunbroker completed auction #121499310. Is the fore-end correct or should there be a cap on it? Also, it is marked .22 Long. Is the chamber the same as today's Long Rifle?
I was kind of surprised I got it for that price.

Yes, there should be a cap on it. You can use modern .22 Longs in it. Too bad someone butchered the muzzle though.

The threading does not look like it was done at the factory.It would take a better picture to be sure. They did a fair number at Winchester and they did have a cap. Look in Campbell's Volume 2 page 114

Interesting. I wonder if those are British proof marks next to the caliber stamp on the barrel. Hard to tell in the picture.

I would be out there looking for the correct silencer. Maybe a Cody letter would confirm factory installation, but British proofs would seem to point to installation over there.

What would a "correct" silencer be, a Maxim?

The rifle was received today. There was a muzzle cap on it. It didn't show up in the picture. I think the threaded muzzle is aftermarket, as the front sight was cut back enough for the threads. The rifle shoots .22 Long Rifle cartridges just fine. Maybe the chamber was previously opened up. The bore is nice. Would there be any advantage in running a .22 Long Rifle match chamber reamer into the chamber? I know that Winder muskets are not supposed to cock the hammer when the lever is dropped, but this one does it about 5 percent of the time. Is there an easy fix?

The hammer going to half cock when the action is cycled is because of the fly installed in the hammer. If you open the action and turn the rifle upside down you will be able to see the tail of the hammer, and it will slit. Fit into this slit is an odd shaped piece of metal, the fly, that pivots on a small pin. This fly is designed to keep the sear from engaging the full cock notch, so the hammer settles at half cock. If you were to remove it the hammer would come to full cock when the action is cylcled.
Undoubtedly this fly is just gummed up a bit and a good cleaning would solve the problem. It should move freely.
