You can always find rabid breed fans. I even know people who think Clumber Spaniels are great field dogs.
Just buy an English Pointer or English Setter from a top kennel and be done with it. They are far more proven in the field, the gene pool is far greater, they have far better genetics, etc. The chances of you getting a good dog are ridiculously higher.
It's easy to get caught up in all the romance and nostalgia of the rare breeds. But once you get the dog, you may wind up paying a lot more for it in time, frustration, energy, etc.
There's a reason some breeds are rare. Why bother?
(And aren't all the real good Red/Irish Setters at least 50% English Setter anyway? hahaha)
