Barrel Browner I have seen some in some sorry states but if the internal bore is reasonably o.k. and the wall thickness is there it is surprising what can be done. I strike them up then they go to a Gunsmith friend in the Midlands who takes them to somewhere in Brum. I find striking them up quite thereputic. It's good to see the eventual transformation. Do you work out of Birmingham? Lagopus.....

I am based in north devon covering all the local shops but work comes from all over the country including birmingham,plus one chap sending work from caithness in scotland!! it is theraputic but not if you have 3 or 4 like it!!

My SW after six months six fathoms in salt water tidal rip, in inexpensive plastic gun case, came up with all metal covered in orange-coloured slime. The bores were perfect, no rust, shiny as the day they left the factory. Maybe the oil film from cleaning provided protection. When Nick Makinson finished with the gun, it was as new.

Many years ago I did a couple of guns which had been stolen & the "Evidence" dropped down an old hand dug well, where they were later recovered. These were quite rusty, but had not pitted to the extent of making them unsafe. One was a Browning A-5, don't recall the other but was a handgun as I recall. Didn't take any pics, but they came out very well.

Rust is an awfully generic term. I've cleaned up a couple guns that were almost totally brown. A little very fine steel wool and oil left them in almost perfect condition. Last year I bought a 12 ga Baker Damascus barrel that had some very localized but fine grained rust about a third of the way from the breech end. I had high hopes that they would clean up, but the pitting under that narrow strip of rust actually perforated the left barrel clear through and ate much of the way through the top rib. My great buy turned into a $10.00 tomato stake. The rest of those barrels were in beautiful shape. I've been playing with a rust remover called Evaporust that I bought at an auto parts swap meet. It seems to do a good job of removing rust without attacking the base metal at all. It's supposedly safe and not the least bit irritating to bare skin. It does of course remove blue.
