Jani,
You are correct!! It is the short 450. I like that even better.
I am very recoil sensitive. What might the appropriate load be??

Bob:

The falling fir tree with escutcheon/shield with crossed flails atop is the Weipert mark which notes that the joined tubes experienced the 2nd Austro-Hungarian black powder proof. The Weipert proofhouse either honored the German first proof being 3 times the service powder charge and doubled load or opted to began with the joined state but I would suspect one would see an intertwined "EW" on each tube for the preliminary proof if the tubes were sourced in the Empire. It's just my guess, but I think the arrow next to the proofhouse record number to note some type of import mark. Then the Hapsburg double headed eagle/final proofmark notes the joined tubes experiencing a 3rd firing or viewing. I think it to date between 1891(June 23rd) and September 13, 1899 when the semi-smokeless/nitro mark was added by decree. Examples seem to lean toward this same time being when a date code in the data string was added, but this assumption is pure conjecture on my part.

Kind Regards,

Bob,
Bullets (lead) were usualy on the light side, 19-22 grams, with flat point or hollow point. Bullet diameter from 11.65mm to 11.85mm. Traditional load was caseful of black powder.
It seems to me that the ancient 11.6x60R/.450 Express (Short) could be roughly compared to modern .44 Mag as far as hunting performance is concerned.
With kind regards,
Jani

From a 1873 publication/catalogue of the 1873 Universal Expo in Wien, I've found a little more info on Johann Haberda:

Johann Haberda – Büchsenmacher, Frauenberg, Böhmen – Jadggewehre

Das Etablissement, 1814 gegründet, setzt seine Erzeugnisse in Böhem, Nieder-Oesterreich, Steiermark, Ungarn und Frankreich ab.

Which I think says that the company Johann Haberda was founded in 1814 and was a supplier to the following countries/areas/regions: Bohemia, Lower Austria, Styria, Hungary & France.

Kind Regards,

Thank you again Raimey. Since my early posts I have learned and enjoyed this gun. It is a 450 3 1/4" BPE. I'm shooting 48gr of 4198 with a 300gr cast bullet and 13 or 14 gr of dacron at 1900ft/s. Very good regulation at 50 yds and 8" high. On my way to Texas next week to see how it handles pigs.
