Where you been? I was wondering if you were down helping Thorny out, haven't seen a Jack post in a while. Welcome back.
Perfect grouse gun? For me, thats easy. I already built it. Tobin 16. Restocked in a straight grip with nice streaked English walnut. 6lbs 4ozs-I don't shoot guns lighter than that all that well. Bores by Stan Baker, chokes loose IC and loose M. Double triggers please, hey, I have a handwarmer, and I know how to use it. The Tobin gift is the roller equipped triggers and locks. The Tobin curse is the quick off face death they suffer with SAMMI spec ammunition. You have to keep it light, a good thing, really.
A secret, when I load it with Eley VIP 5s instead of the 6s or 7s, it becomes a perfect pheasant gun, too. 'Ain't life grand?

The perfect grouse gun? The one you have in your hand. Otherwise, a 26" 6.2 lb. sk/lt.mod DT 16b would be about ideal in my opinion (like C'man's). You know, if you're into that sort of thing.  I have to agree with marklart on both comments (save for a 75 cm barrel on the double). The gun I have taken most grouse with was the 16X65 barrel of a kombi gun because I carried it in grouse and turkey areas way, way more than any other gun. More grouse fell to that gun than to all others I have used. Also far fewer shots per grouse, thanks to picking shots I was sure of. But, some days I wished I had a second shotgun barrel. Niklas

I like my 6 lb. Parker Repro 28 ga. for ruffed grouse, agree with Jack that anything much heavier is more than I want to carry by the wrist one-handed for very long.
For pheasants and prairie grouse I use a 6-3/4 lb. 16 ga. M-21. It's heavier than many 16s, but still an easy all day carry for 2 hands. I'm 54, maybe when I'm older I'll want something lighter. And I'm ignorant cretin enough to see nothing ugly in the 21's frame or it's lines with straight grip and splinter forend. I don't like the look of the PG/BTFE - on a 21 or any other gun.

Jeff's gun is, indeed, a one-handed wand, but I favor an '09 grade 40, .16 Sauer at 5lbs., 13 oz. -- imp. cyl, imp. mod.
My problem is one discussed here in many other posts: the gun is nearly too nice to take into grouse covers -- but why have a gun you can't - or won't - use? I've decided to use it, and if I can't wear it out, Jeff can try to finish the job somewhere down the line.
I've collected more birds with another Sauer, a '44 Hawk grade .16 choked full and full. Polywad Doublewide 8's in right barrel, RST 7/8oz 8's in left. 6lb. 6oz., 28"

Double triggers please... Been out a-hunting, of course. When the wind chill gets into the minus figures, my DT gun stays home. Trying to move a gloved and frozen finger from trigger to trigger - or even to feel a trigger - is a recipe for bye-bye-bird. My non-selective ST Bernie has a trigger guard you could shove a fist through, and even a slowpoke like me can often get off a reasonable second shot. Oh, yeah, Ted, I know DTs let you select chokes faster - but frankly the Cyl-Mod sequence is all I need for 95% of my opportunities, and I'm willing to give up on that last 5% if I can avoid frostbite! BTW, there are some grouse on the Nemadji SF - or perhaps I should say were...;-)

jack's idea is the same as mine except that my gun is a 20ga SKB Model 500 o/u single trigger, IC/M 26-inch barrels.
