Actually Mr. Moody, what makes any of us do anything? mostly cuz we want to and enjoy it. Why would anyone shoot a Turkey anyhow, when they are on sale at King Soopers for 39 cents/lb. I am going to shoot one of mine this year with a Lefever "E" 10 RST #5's. Why would I do that when I have a perfectly good Browning BPS 10??? CUZ!

smilinjohn,
The only legitimate way to determine how your shotgun will perform is to pattern it with appropriate size shot for turkey to see how it patterns at appropriate distances.

Heavy13 is a turkey shot made by environmetals (heavi-shot people). It's veeeeeeeeeeeeery sim to their heavy shot.

If your double patterns well, I'd use it. A SxS sit's nicely on your knee when your sitting under a tree Stuff it with quality plated/buffered shot. Here in Mich we can use nothing bigger than 4 shot.

And for the record, I did whack a hen during the fall turkey season (incidental when duck hunting) with 3" steel #4's out of the before mentioned cabela's full choke. Killed her GYD at 30yds.

I have killed lot's of non-waterfowl game with 3" steel #4's - if it's in season - in range -

The largest shot allowed in Minnesota is #4. How does Heavy13 compare in size?

heavy13 is the type of metel the shot is made of. It is as hard if not harder than hevi-shot. I don't think I would use it in an older fixed choke gun. Nut'in wrong with copper plated lead with buffer.

John. I'd like to add my 2 cents. First of all DO GET SEVERAL TYPES OF AMMO AND SOME TURKEY TARGETS AND SEE HOW THEY PATTERN. If you do nothing else do pattern your gun. I used Western #6 1 1/8 oZ SX16H6 lead shot(paper shells) in my Elsie 16 bore(full and extra full) last year in KY and NY. KY 1 shot at 20 paces--dead Tom. NY 2 shots at 55 paces, the second at flying Tom, who dropped like a sack of potatoes. Like someone else I misjudged the distance, but ended up OK. I've used 10,12,and 16 sucessfully, and have no qualms about using the 16 again this year. ps, i've also take them with bow/arrow, and my brother keeps asking if I'm gonna try a sling shot next. LOL. He's 10 or 12 bore only. And has killed more Turkey than I've ever seen. He advise #5 or #6 or the 5/6 combo. Good luck with whatever you choose, but DO PATTERN YOUR GUN WITH DIFFERENT AMMO. Regards, Jim.

I used PB in a low pressure load with 1 1/8 oz of #6 lead shot in my '06 Ithaca Lewis. Both barrels are mod. and good to about 20 yards. I hunt from a blind with decoys set at 12 to 15 yrds.

I use a mouth and box call.

Thank goodness for dumb Jakes.

Tnx

Use the 3" double with two triggers. 5 or 6 what ever patterns best. Lead is fine. Nice to have an instant choice of chokes. Many of the extra full turkey chokes are useless if you happen to get one at about 15 yards.

This year I'm using a Husky 17 F/F with 2 1/2" #5 . It has two barrels so If it doesn't work the first time I'll shoot it twice.
