I felt sorry for it, can not decide what caliber to go with as anything up to 500/465 was used on these actions.....

Michael:
It is a Holland and Holland, or more accurately a Holland and Woodward. This particular rifle was a collaberative effort by Henry Holland and his evil twin brother Bubba Holland.
A rare action and one to be coveted...

A few years ago Mark Silver told me that he and another gunsmith were collaborating on building half a dozen of these actions. Haven't checked to see where the project is now. If he is involved you can be sure (1) the quality will be supreme, and (2) it will be very costly.

Holland/Woodward as Glenn has so kindly pointed out. Currently wearing a lovely stainless steel barrel in the classic British chambering of .45/110.....yuck. It will end up in a sporting configuration once proper caliber has been determined.....still thinking on that one. I currently own 2 small bore falling blocks and have a .450 NE under construction. A .375 flanged mag with a quick detachable scope is sounding pretty darn useful. I may contact Mr. Silver regarding H&H style scope mounts. Steve

What's the purpose of the silver flat on top of the barrel, ahead of the receiver? Is it attched to the barrel or the receiver?

no....it is a very poor example of a Nock form breech. Here is what a proper one looks like.

Steve, I Googled Nock form breech and came away with the understanding that there once was a breech plug on this flat to facilitate front ignition of black powder. Is this flat now just a decorative vestige of that system? Does it bear any relation to Rigby flats?

SKB,
I would offer the .360 No. 2 as a suggested calibre. Years back, I encountered a Wm. Evans double in that cartridge that was an incredibly accurate rifle. I started out to build one with a Ruger #1 action, but the world took a different turn.
