I'm an old guy trying something new. I want to buy a small piece of ebony for my first try at fitting a forend tip. Needs to be 1 1/4" by 1 1/4" by 1 1/2" long.

If you live near almost any decent woodworking store - WoodSmith, WoodCraft, etc. you can find this stuff for sale.
You can also buy it off EBay and a dozen other places, but it's better if you can see it, as ebony varies in quality a lot.

I bought some 2X2X12 from Woodcraft that had a thick coat of wax on them. I had it for a few months before I scraped the wax off and in 2 days they had full-length cracks throughout the entire length. I bought 2 pieces at $26 each and have nothing to show for it. My advice is to buy it from Brownell's or Midway - they have 2" X 2" X 3" (approx) that are plenty big enough and are made for the purpose you intend.
A smart man once said "You get what you pay for" and that is the case in this instance. I never go cheap on materials or tools, as they will let you down when you need them most.
